Oscar De La Hoya comes out of retirement

The “Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya is back to make his return to the ring after a 12 year hiatus.

Steve Kim reported for ESPN Wednesday that the 47 year old, former 11-time title holder was coming back into the ring and it begs the question, what’s the reasoning behind all of this at this state and time?

De La Hoya flat out said he missed it.

“I miss being in the ring,” De La Hoya said to ESPN. “I love boxing. Boxing is what gave me everything I have today, and I just miss it.”

“Look, it’s been a long time, yes,” De La Hoya said. “But actually my jab feels faster than ever. I have to make sure that my conditioning is perfect, my health is good. And that’s going to take place in the next few weeks. So we’ll see.”

That last time we all saw him in the ring was when he was stopped by Manny Pacquiao and admits that it wasn’t his best showing.

“Look, my last fight with Pacquiao, I weighed in at 145 and obviously that was a shell of myself,” said De La Hoya looking back on facing  Pacquiao at 147 after seven years of being at 154.

So now that he is back, who will he face?

“Any top guy, any top guy out there,” said De La Hoya.

One of those top guys I can think of is Canelo Alvarez.

Now before you start the eye rolling, let me lay out that real life tenuous relationship between the two plays out a lot like the classic story that the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) between the worker “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and promoter Vince McMahon. That pre-determined script made them a publicly traded company. This idea will be the old-fashioned way of two fighters just “settling their differences”.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) on Tuesday ordered for the vacant 168 Lb. title belt a contest between Canelo and Avni Yildrim. So, it bears repeating that even at De La Hoya’s age, this already sounds more interesting.

Crazier things have and will happen in boxing, this idea isn’t above it. De La Hoya begins sparing for whoever he plans to face in a few weeks.
