Eddie Hearn with Boots Ennis for the Xander Zayas vs Jaron Ennis press conference

On June 27, at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, Xander Zayas vs Jaron Ennis headlined a Matchroom Boxing card in association with Top Rank for Zayas’ WBO/WBA super welterweight title. The entire main card streamed live on DAZN PPV. It was an action-packed fight that saw “Boots” win by seventh-round TKO. Speaking to the press after the fight, Eddie Hearn revealed that Zayas has a rematch clause.

Jaron Ennis records stunning stoppage win over Xander Zayas

Ennis settled quickly into the fight, finding a home for his left hand almost at will. A beautifully timed left hand from Ennis (36-0, 32 KOs) knocked down Zayas (23-1, 13 KOs). It was a dream opening round from the Philadelphia fighter.

“Boots” picked his punches impressively in the second round, leaving Zayas struggling to get any kind of foothold in the fight. The third round was a barnstormer, with Zayas landing two big right hands that appeared to stun Ennis. Despite being hurt, “Boots” recovered well and landed a big shot of his own near the bell.

Zayas looked his best when punching between Ennis’s work; however, “Boots” had definitely brought his power up to 154, meeting Zayas in the middle of the ring in round five, where both fighters exchanged huge punches. Ennis soon landed a huge uppercut, knocking his Puerto Rican opponent down again. The rest of the round can only be described as a vicious beatdown from Ennis on Zayas, with the Puerto Rican fighter somehow surviving the round.

Round seven marked the end for Zayas, as “Boots” came through his punches with venom. Another knockdown soon followed, and Zayas’s corner had seen enough and withdrew their man from the fight, crowning Jaron Ennis the new unified WBO/WBA super welterweight champion.

Reacting to his win in the ring, Ennis said: “I was enjoying myself. I was having fun putting on a show for the fans. And I got the job done. And, I appreciate Xander Zayas for taking this, because he didn’t have to.”

Eddie Hearn looks to the future for Jaron Ennis

Looking ahead to the future for Ennis, Eddie Hearn interestingly revealed Zayas has a rematch clause: “I really wanna probably bring the next fight back to Philadelphia, whoever it is, to be honest with you. It’s not common knowledge, but Xander has a rematch clause. I believe he’ll probably move to 160, but he said in the ring, ‘I didn’t struggle at the weight and felt pretty good.’

“He might look back, and maybe he looks at the third round…he has the right to exercise it. At the same time, he took a lot of punishment, and I think Boots will be much better next time, to be honest with you. Because as much experience as he has in terms of fights, that was his first real moment in the madness, and he’ll learn a lot from that tonight; he’s only just turned 29.”
