On June 21, at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, Lewis Edmondson recorded the biggest win of his career, defeating the experienced Lyndon Arthur by unanimous decision to win the vacant WBA international light heavyweight title, with scorecards of 97-93, 96-95, and 96-94. After this victory, Edmondson spoke to the Queensberry Promotions media team, where he took aim at Ben Whittaker and accused him of not having the courage to face him.

Lewis Edmondson defeats Lyndon Arthur

Edmondson (12-1, 3 KOs) faced Arthur (25-4, 16 KOs) on the Ryan Garner vs Michael Magnesi undercard, and his herky-jerky style appeared to cause issues for Arthur in the early rounds, with Edmondson boxing well off the back foot.

Arthur began to have more joy as the fight went on, but Edmondson was still picking his punches well, with Billy Joe Saunders and the rest of his corner praising the Southampton fighter throughout.

Opinions at ringside were split on who had won, but after some deliberation, the judge’s scorecards read 96-95, 97-93, and 96-94, all in favour of Lewis Edmondson, who is now the WBA international light heavyweight champion.

Lewis Edmondson accuses Ben Whittaker

Speaking to the Queensberry media team after his win against Arthur, Edmondson discussed a potential Ben Whittaker  (11-0-1, 8 KOs) fight:

“We got offered that fight loads of times. We signed to fight that loads of times. He keeps f***ing about. I don’t think he wants any proper fights, you know. Eddie Hearn’s babying him, wiping his bum, playing with his hair.

“He’s not gonna come out and fight. He’s got no balls. We saw that. He’s diving out the ring like a big woman, and looking for wheelchairs. He’s a pussy, that’s what he is,” said Edmondson.

The domestic light heavyweight scene is buzzing at the moment, with plenty of potential, intriguing fights for Edmondson. A showdown with Whittaker could be possible, but it feels like it’s a fight that needs to happen soon. If Whittaker keeps winning, it’s likely Matchroom will be looking past Edmondson. It would be anything but a walkover for Whittaker, with Edmondson presenting an awkward fighting style for anyone in the 175 division.
