Canelo Alvarez: What’s on the Agenda for the Mexican Legend?

Canelo Alvarez’s recent decision to sign a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season triggered delight amongst most boxing fans.

The agreement effectively ended rumours about a potential fight with YouTuber Jake Paul, who has no place getting in the same ring as the Mexican.

Alvarez’s potential opponents during the series are all high-class performers, and each bout would generate significant interest in the betting industry.

Punters will be clamouring to find the latest boxing odds at Betway when Alvarez is in action and they will be hoping he delivers some sizeable payouts to their betting accounts.

High-Profile Fights Await Canelo Alvarez After Signing With Riyadh Season

Undisputed Comes First for Canelo Alvarez

First on the agenda for Alvarez is a meeting with William Scull for the undisputed super middleweight championship on the first weekend in May.

Alvarez is bidding to regain the IBF title that was stripped of him last year after he declined to face Scull. He already holds the WBC, WBA and WBO titles at 168 pounds.

Scull holds a 23-0 record with nine knockouts, but he has yet to face anyone who comes remotely close to Alvarez regarding boxing ability.

While Paul has criticised Alvarez for scuppering his dream fight, facing a legitimate boxer is undoubtedly the right move for the Mexican.

Paul’s fights amount to little more than exhibitions in the grand scheme of things. Getting into the ring with him would arguably damage Alvarez’s coveted legacy.

A victory over Scull would set up an intriguing showdown with Terence Crawford, who currently boasts a 41-0 record with 31 knockouts.

September has been proposed as the most likely time for this fight to be staged and it would unquestionably generate plenty of interest in boxing circles.

Crawford will need to move up two weight divisions after winning a world title at super welterweight in August, but he believes that will not be a problem.

Canelo Alvarez is a natural at 168 pounds, and many pundits believe the size disparity between the pair will make the fight a one-sided contest.

However, Crawford recently posted a picture of himself on social media tipping the scales at 186lbs, which is intriguing to see.

The biggest issue for Crawford could be ring rust given that he has decided not to fight again until he faces the Mexican superstar in Saudi Arabia.

After Terence Crawford

A meeting with David Benavidez could be next on the agenda for Canelo Alvarez although he would need to step up to light heavyweight to make it happen.

Alvarez has always been open to the idea of returning to light heavyweight, and a clash with Benavidez would be a fitting third fight in the four-fight series.

Looking further ahead, the winner of the Artur Beterbiev versus Dmitry Bivol rematch on February 22 could be a viable fourth opponent for Alvarez.

Alvarez faced Bivol at light heavyweight in 2022 and lost by unanimous decision, and he has made no secret of his desire to exact revenge at some point.

Bivol subsequently faced Beterbiev for the undisputed title at 175lbs in October but was defeated on a majority decision in Saudi Arabia.

Either fighter would be a possible future opponent for Alvarez, although things could get complicated if Bivol wins the rematch and a trilogy fight is organised.

Regardless of this, Canelo Alvarez’s upcoming series of fights should all be worth watching as he strives to further cement his legacy as a boxing legend.
