Three Ways John Ryder Could Beat Canelo

At Big Fight Weekend, we are preparing for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s homecoming fight against mandatory challenger John Ryder. The fight will take place on May 6 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The British fighter will aim to write his name in boxing folklore with a sensational upset. We decided to take a look at three different ways the Englishman could beat Canelo.

Three Potential Ways John Ryder Can Beat Canelo

John Ryder: Closing the Distance

On May 6, John Ryder takes on the role of David, who will travel into the lion’s den in Mexico and take on the Mexican goliath and undisputed super middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez. One vital component The Gorilla will have to get right is closing the distance.

He will need to get in close and risk taking a few shots, but closing the distance between himself and Canelo will make it more difficult for the Mexican to load up on his power punches. The Islington-born fighter is a brilliant pressure fighter. He will need to keep walking forward and risk taking a shot or two from Canelo – but by walking forward, he will keep the distance at a minimum between himself and the Mexican superstar, which should help him negate some of his opponents power.

Solid Defence

Canelo recently spoke to Big Fight Weekend about the upcoming fight against Ryder, and the defeat against Dmitry Bivol. The loss against the Tokmak-born fighter is where we wanted to start. His defence against Alvarez was brilliant. His guard was almost unbreakable and he kept it high throughout the fight. Having this solid guard will be vitally important for Ryder if he is to cause any frustration for Canelo. The English fighter will need to come forward, that’s clear – but he will need to keep his guard high and throw punches quickly and from angles.

Believe It’s Possible

Boxing has witnessed a few upsets over the years, such as Buster Douglas dethroning Mike Tyson and Lloyd Honeyghan upsetting Donald Curry among others. Ryder will need to have what all these fighters had, belief. The Gorilla will climb through the ropes in Guadalajara and will need to believe he has what it takes to shock the boxing world.

Ryder will be joined in his corner by legendary trainer Tony Sims, who has trained a plethora of great fighters, including Darren Barker, Dillian White, Conor Benn, and Kevin Mitchell, and recently helped guide Joe Cordina to become a two-time world champion. Sims is brilliant at putting together a game plan for his fighters, and there is no doubt Ryder will need to execute any game plan to perfection to trouble the Mexican superstar. Despite the unlikely odds of the English fighter upsetting Canelo, a trainer of Sims quality will be vital in instilling the belief inside of Ryder that he can shock the world.
