‘I Believe That’s Even a Bigger Fight’: What’s Next for Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez?

On December 16, Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (19-0, 12 KOs) recorded a career-best win against Sunny Edwards (20-1, 4 KOs), capturing the IBF flyweight world title at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, to go with his WBO strap. “Bam” was not short of motivation going into the fight, and his performance reflected his high motivational levels. After this exceptional win, attention has already turned to what comes next for Rodriguez. He spoke after the fight about who might be his next opponent.

Recap of Rodriguez vs. Edwards

“Bam” quickly took control of the fight, damaging the eye of Edwards with his accurate jab. Rodriguez controlled the distance superbly, which negated the strengths of Edwards, who couldn’t hit “Bam” because he was smothering his work so well.
His jab was his most effective weapon, but he also picked his punches well throughout, which stopped his British opponent from gaining momentum. Rodriguez quickly started walking through the best shots from his opponent, which led to increased pressure, leading to “Bam” breaking him down, landing a beautiful left cross, forcing Edwards to the canvas. At the end of round nine, the British fighter’s corner decided to throw the towel in, which crowned the American the number one flyweight in the world.

Juan Francisco Estrada

Juan Francisco Estrada (44-3, 28 KOs) is the current ring and WBC super flyweight champion, presenting a historic chance for “Bam” to move up in weight and win two more straps while enhancing his legacy. The Mexican legend was last seen when he defeated Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez in their trilogy battle. Estrada is one of the best lower-weight boxers of all time. He is brilliant at firing off combinations on opponents before pivoting away out of range. He is also an impressive counterpuncher – who would need to use all his experience to stop “Bam.” After his victory over Edwards, Rodriguez seemed to favour a potential fight against Estrada over a possible clash with “Chocolatito” Gonzalez: “I believe that’s even a bigger fight (against Estrada).”

Artem Dalakian

Another possible future opponent for “Bam” is the current WBA flyweight champion Artem Dalakian (22-0, 15 KOs) Despite not being a big name like Estrada or Gonzalez, the Ukrainian is undefeated and has another title, which could tempt Rodriguez to face him. Dalakian would be an awkward opponent for the American, with his long reach and aggressive style. “Bam” would have to close the distance well, while using his ability to throw accurate combinations, and pivot away from the dangerous Ukrainian.

Julio Cesar Martinez

Another option for Rodriguez could be WBC World flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez (20-2, 15 KOs). The Mexican was due to face Angelino Cordova on the final Showtime card, but it was postponed due to visa issues experienced by Martinez. He is a powerful fighter with KO power, as proven by his 15 KOs. Martinez is also unpredictable and throws punches from unorthodox angels – ensuring “Bam” will need to stay focused throughout. The American will need to time his punches well, which was a major reason Gonzalez defeated Martinez.
