Julio Cesar Martinez vs. Angelino Cordova Postponed

Yet another fight involving Julio Cesar Martinez (20-2, 15 KOs, 2 NCs) has been postponed. The reigning WBC flyweight champion will no longer participate on the December 16 Showtime card that sees David Morrell take on Sena Agbeko in a super middleweight clash. Martinez was to defend his title against Angelino Cordova (18-0-1, 12 KOs) on the undercard of that event.

According to a press release from Showtime Sports, the Mexican fighter experienced visa issues while trying to enter the United States. The clash will now take place at a later date next year. As a result of this development, Showtime’s final broadcast will continue as a tripleheader.

A History of Cancellations for Julio Cesar Martinez

This is not the first time a fight had to be rescheduled due to “El Rey.” A mandatory defence against McWilliams Arroyo in 2020 – was cancelled due to illness. The same matchup was again postponed in 2021 when Martinez suffered an injury. Once again, this clash was postponed in 2022 when the WBC titleholder became ill.

Neither Martinez nor his team have issued a statement at the time of writing.

Showtime Telecast Will Go Ahead

Despite the postponement of this bout, the remainder of the Showtime card will go ahead. The main event will see Morrell (9-0, 8 KOs) take on Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs). Just before that clash, Chris Colbert (17-1, 6 KOs) meets Jose Valenzuela (12-2, 8 KOs) in a 12-round lightweight rematch. Opening the broadcast is Robert Guerrero (37-6-1, 20 KOs, 2 NCs) against Andre Berto (32-5, 24 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight rematch.

Morrell last fought in April this year on the undercard of an event that saw Gervonta “Tank” Davis stop Ryan Garcia in seven rounds. The Cuban faced Yamaguchi Falcao, knocking him out in the opening round.

Agbeko was the original opponent in April. However, a licencing issue meant the fight did not go ahead. The Ghanaian fought as recently as November this year, stopping Bruno Romay in two rounds.
