Before Israil Madrimov vs. Terence Crawford: Magomed Kurbanov
On March 8, 2024, Madrimov won his WBA crown, as he impressed against Magomed Kurbanov. Madrimov showed his excellent movement and punch variation which seemingly overwhelmed his Russian opponent. “The Dream” was first to every punch and in round five he rocked Kurbanov and pounced, putting together a series of heavy punches which forced referee Steve Gray to wave the fight off and crown The Uzbek fighter the new WBA super welterweight title.
Raphael Igbokwe
Madrimov faced Raphael Igbokwe on April 8, 2023. It was a difficult challenge for Madrimov as the Houston southpaw tried to use his physical advantages to boss the fight and negate the pressure tactics of Madrimov. The Uzbek fighter did his best work on the inside but it was difficult against Igbokwe. “The Dream” looked at his best when he boxed at a distance and picked his shots. The Houston fighter was brave and never gave up, but Madrimov was ultimately too slick and got the better in all notable exchanges. The judge’s scorecards reflected the dominance of Madrimov. Two scorecards read 99-91 and the third read 100-90, all in favour of the Uzek fighter.
Michel Soro
The first fight between Madrimov and Michel Soro ended in a controversial TKO win for the Uzbek fighter, and their rematch at the O2 Arena on July 9, 2022, was eagerly anticipated but ultimately ended in a disappointing three-round technical draw.
Madrimov had the best of the opening two rounds and was seemingly a step quicker than his opponent. He was using his jab well and controlling the distance, but a big clash of heads in the third left Soro with a nasty cut near his left eye and ultimately led to the fight ending prematurely.
