Hearn given extension to make Ryan Garcia-Luke Campbell

On deadline day to secure the proposed Lightweight battle between unbeaten California rising Contender, Ryan Garcia and former WBC Champ, Luke Campbell of England, it appears that Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn will end up with the promotional rights.

The World Boxing Council had imposed Tuesday as a deadline before the fight, which would be between their top two contenders, would go to purse bids and be open to others to make it happen.

Then, later on Tuesday afternoon Mike Coppinger, insider for the Athletic, got confirmation from Hearn that he’s been given a one week extension to finalize the deal:

Hearn telling Coppinger,

“Obviously we’d love to have crowds back through the door and we hope by middle-end of November this will be a reality. We are finalizing contracts.”

Garcia, 20-0, 17 KOs, has been difficult to deal with this summer, as he would not agree to a July 4th main event fight on DAZN streaming for his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, reportedly due to money. So, he has essentially been in “limbo” waiting for the next opportunity.

Meanwhile, Campbell is 20-3, 16 KOs. But, the popular English fighter suffered the loss of the WBC belt last August 31st, when Unified Lightweight champion, Vasiliy Lomachenko dominated him in a 12-round decision win in London.

Lomachenko has since been designated as the “Franchise champion” by the WBC. That’s a designation that they previously also gave to Canelo Alvarez for their Middleweight championship.

And, it essentially means that they will not strip the fighter of the title, even if he’s not regularly defending it, until he loses a fight in that division’s weight class.

As we wrote earlier Wednesday, Lomachenko is slated to defend his WBC “Franchise,” as well as, WBO and WBA belts against IBF champ, Teofimo Lopez in October.

Meanwhile, the winner of the proposed November Garcia-Campbell fight could be meeting the WBC’s current champ. Devin Haney, in their next bout. That would likely be in the first part of 2021.
