Both men spoke at a press conference ahead of their June 20 clash. Below is some of what they had to say.
Ryan Garner vs. Michael Magnesi press conference quotes
Ryan Garner
“Still hasn’t sunk in yet, fighting at St Mary’s Stadium,” said Garner. “Something I’ve dreamed about for years. Something I’ve talked about for years…Sometimes [I] think to myself ‘am I kidding myself?’ Do you know what I mean? Actually getting into a football stadium. The size and magnitude of it is very hard to do, do you know what I mean? So I can’t thank Frank Warren enough, Queensberry Promotions, obviously [and] Phil Parsons, Southampton Football Club, and most importantly my trainer and manager Wayne Batten…”
Michael Magnesi
“I’m happy to be here,” said Magnesi through an interpreter. “It’s the third time I come here. I saw the warmth of people. They’re very friendly people and I’m very excited for this fight. But we should [be saying rather] than me in the lion’s den, he will come in the wolf’s den.”
Fight prediction
From Big Fight Weekend’s Ricky Carroll: Garner brings a high work rate to every fight, which means entertainment for fans but a nightmare for his opponents. He is versatile with his tactics, but his ability to pick his punches remains. His footwork is excellent, as is his ability to create angles to attack his opponent.
Magnesi brings plenty of experience and has mixed at a good level. He has pop in his punches, and rarely takes a step back, meaning the fight could catch fire early.
We believe Garner will have too much speed and, with the backing of the crowd, will win by unanimous decision.
