Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn: Shakur Stevenson breaks it down
On September 12 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV, Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn will headline a co-promoted card between Zuffa Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions. Fight fans in the United Kingdom and Ireland will be able to catch the action live on DAZN, while the rest of the world can watch the event on Paramount+.
Garcia’s WBC welterweight world title, which he won earlier this year against Mario Barrios, will be on the line. Looking ahead to this intriguing bout, Shakur Stevenson spoke to Ariel Helwani, revealing who he favours to have their hand raised on September 12.
Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn confirmed for September 12
Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) produced a disciplined and dominating performance against Barrios in his last fight to win the WBC title. This was a huge improvement since a disappointing defeat to Rolly Romero. Garcia’s problems inside and outside of the ring have been well documented, but he looked focused and at his best against Barrios.
Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) shocked the boxing world when he moved to Zuffa Boxing from Matchroom. His two clashes against Chris Eubank Jr were memorable, whereas his recent win over Regis Prograis can only be described as underwhelming.
Looking ahead to Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn, if a fully focused Garcia arrives on September 12, it’s difficult to see him losing his title, no matter what Benn turns up.
“This is such a great fight,” said promoter Dana White in the press release. “Conor Benn has won 26 of his 27 professional fights [sic] and is coming off a big win in the U.K. earlier this year. Ryan Garcia is one of the biggest stars in boxing and a world champion. These guys are in their prime, and it’s a fight they’ve both wanted for a long time. They’ll come face-to-face for the first time today before stepping into the ring on September 12 during Mexican Independence Day weekend at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The energy in that place will be incredible.”
Shakur Stevenson weighs in on Ryan Garcia vs Conor Benn
Looking ahead to September 12 and breaking the fight down, Stevenson said: “I think Ryan should win that pretty easily. I don’t think this should be a hard fight for Ryan, but you never know which Ryan shows up.
“Conor Benn might get in there, scare him, and put him in his place, so we’ll see.”
It’s difficult to see Benn beating a fully dialled-in Garcia, but the Brit will not be coming over to lie down and let the American keep his WBC belt without a fight. Expect fireworks in the build-up, and fight night should be entertaining.
