Alvarez ultimately got the split decision, with the judges scorecards reading 117-11 and 115-113 for Canelo, with the third judge scoring it 115-113 for Lara. The Cuban-born boxer was a constant moving target, and this proved difficult for the Mexican to get close and unload combinations. The relentless pressure from Canelo was enough for him to get the verdict, and after the fight he said: “I came to fight. He came to run.” The judges agreed.

Golovkin landed a massive right hand in round ten, which swung the flow of the fight back in his favour. The 12th round was a close call, with two judges giving Alvarez the verdict, which was ultimately the key moment. Two scorecards gave the Mexican the verdict of 115-113, with the other card reading 114-114.
Sergey Kovalev
Alvarez stepped up to light heavyweight to challenge Sergey Kovalev for the WBO world light heavyweight title. It was a difficult encounter for the Mexican as Kovalev boxed diligently behind his jab and controlled the distance well throughout. Even when Canelo got through with a body shot or two, the Russian did not deviate from his plan.

The plan appeared to be working until Canelo finally got through with an over-the-top left hook, which scrambled Kovalev’s senses before the Mexican landed a massive right hand – forcing the referee to immediately wave the fight off, giving him the 11th round TKO victory.
It remains to be seen who is next for Canelo, but amongst his many victories, the Mexican superstar has proven he has what it takes to come through tough opponents.
