“I’m grateful to God for the opportunity to once again fight for the undisputed championship,” said Usyk in a statement that was part of the press release. “Thank you, Daniel, for taking care of my IBF belt – now I want it back.”
“This is the fight I wanted and demanded and now I get my chance for revenge against Oleksandr Usyk,” said Dubois. “I should have won the first fight and was denied by the judgement of the referee, so I will make no mistake this time around in front of my people at the national stadium in my home city. I am a superior and more dangerous fighter now and Usyk will find this out for himself on July 19. I would like to thank my promoter Frank for making this happen for me and I intend to repay him by becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.”
Oleksandr Usyk vs. Daniel Dubois: The First Fight
This will be the second meeting between the pair. They had previously faced each other in August 2023 in Wrocław, Poland. At the time, Usyk was defending his WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight world titles. He would go on to win the fight via ninth-round knockout.
Though Usyk was winning most of the rounds comfortably before the stoppage, there was a moment of controversy in the fifth. Dubois landed a shot to the body that was ruled a low blow by referee Luis Pabon. While some insisted that the punch was a low blow, others thought it was a legitimate punch. Regardless of how one viewed the shot, Usyk went on to outbox Dubois and eventually get the knockout win.
Path to Undisputed
After their fight in Poland, Usyk would go on to have two fights in Saudi Arabia against Tyson Fury. In their first encounter, the Ukrainian won via split decision to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. Usyk then vacated the IBF title and fought Fury a second time, winning via unanimous decision.
In that same period, Dubois had three fights. The first saw him defeating Jarrell Miller via a tenth-round technical knockout. This was followed by an eighth-round technical knockout of Filip Hrgović, a win that gave Dubois an interim version of the IBF heavyweight world championship. After Usyk vacated the IBF title, the Englishman was promoted to full titlist. Dubois’ first defence of the belt was a fifth-round knockout of Anthony Joshua in September last year.
Additional details regarding Usyk vs. Dubois 2, such as broadcasters and ticket information, will be revealed in the coming weeks and months.
