The Herring-Frampton bout was originally scheduled for the Summer of 2020, but pushed back to Coronavirus concerns. Herring later contracted Covid 19 and delayed his next bout for several weeks.
Herring eventually made the second successful defense of his WBO belt in early September by gutting out a 9th round DQ win in Las Vegas over Jonathan Oquendo. Herring, who improved to 22-2, had to deal all night with the mauling style of Oquendo, who was warned, repeatedly penalized for holding and head butts and then, eventually DQ’ed after the 9th round.
The 34 year old New York native Herring is set to make his third 130 lb. title defense, and expressed excitement and respect for Frampton in the released statement,
“I’m really excited that the fight is finally happening, more importantly it’ll be an honor to share the ring with a true warrior, and class act such as Carl Frampton. It may be the biggest fight of my career to date, but I’ll be more than ready for the task ahead.
“There’s a lot on the line, and I know he’s aiming to make history, but he’ll have to wait another day, because I plan on returning home with my title in hand…”
Herring had hinted earlier this past weekend that the Frampton fight would be happening for February over in the U.K. This after the British Boxing Board of Control would be lifting their temporary ban on fight cards due to the social gathering and Covid 19 restrictions that were put in place for the rest of January.
As for Frampton, he’s (28-2, 16 KOs) and has held the Unified Junior Featherweight and Featherweight World Championships but has recently moved up to 130 lb. He last fought in the middle of August in an easy win over late replacement Darren Traynor at the BT Sport Television Studios in London.
Frampton said in the MTK statement,
“I’m delighted to finally get a date nailed down for this fight that has now been talked about for over a year.
I have the upmost respect for Jamel as a fighter and as a man but there is nobody stopping me on becoming the island of Irelands only ever 3 weight world champ, one of Britain’s only ever 3 weight world champions and potentially have one foot in the hall of fame.”
The Frampton-Herring bout will be held without fans at the same BT Sport Studios, where they have hosted several televised shows since last Summer.
