Anthony Cacace Reveals Potential Move Up in Weight and IBF Mandatory Title Shot
On Saturday, September 21, Anthony Cacace (23-1, 8 KOs) successfully defended his IBO super featherweight title and retained his IBF title against Josh Warrington (31-4-1, 8 KOs) on the Daniel Dubois-Anthony Joshua undercard. If Josh Warrington had won, the Belfast man would have lost his IBF title, because the sanctioning body did not consider Warrington a world title challenger because of his inactivity in the super-featherweight division and being unranked. Cacace has now hinted at a potential move-up in weight and a possible IBF title shot when speaking to BBC Sport in Northern Ireland.

The bout against Warrington didn’t catch fire how many hoped but it was an impressive performance by the Belfast man as he boxed diligently, picking his shots well. Warrington was brave throughout and never stopped trying to close the distance, but “Anto” found a regular home for the uppercut and kept the fight mostly at mid-range successfully.

The spite from Cacace was noticeable throughout, with his punches carrying more impact. “Anto” never looked in trouble as he controlled the distance effectively, with the fight ultimately going to the judges. The scorecards read 118-110 and 117-111 x2 in favour of the Belfast man who was the deserved unanimous decision winner. It now appears the IBF super featherweight champion could move up to lightweight.
Moving to Lightweight
The lightweight division is stacked with some of the most talented boxers, with stars such as Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson entertaining boxing fans globally. If Cacace does decide to move to the lightweight division, he has revealed a clash with IBF champion Vasiliy Lomachenko looks the most likely option: “If I move up to lightweight, I’m the mandatory challenger for Lomachenko’s title.”
