Amanda Serrano Talks About Having Choices and Katie Taylor

On March 2, Amanda Serrano (46-2-1, 30 KOs) will return to the ring to face Nina Meinke (18-3, 4 KOs), where she will co-headline with Jake Paul, who will face Ryan Bourland. As fight night approaches, “The Real Deal” has spoken to Sky Sports about giving up her WBC belt and a potential rematch with Katie Taylor.

Serrano Talks Legacy

Serrano is undoubtedly one of the most decorated female boxers and held all four major featherweight titles. Despite being undisputed, “The Real Deal” made the decision to relinquish the WBC strap, as the organisation refused to sanction three-minute rounds. When asked about her decision, she told Sky Sports: “Greatness requires sacrifice. I sacrificed one belt.” She continued: “It was a hard decision but it was an easy decision if you know what I mean. You don’t want to give something up that you worked so hard for. But if they weren’t going to back me up I had to let it go.”

During the interview, Serrano spoke about a legacy and helping to give choices to up-and-coming female boxers: “I’ve done pretty much everything I needed to do in the sport of women’s boxing.” Speaking about choices: “Seven-division world champion. The undisputed champion. Now it’s time to open up the door for the women coming into the sport and helping the future of women’s boxing.” 

She continued: “I believe if you believe in something really a lot you have to take that stance. I believe that women should have a choice in fighting three, two [-minute rounds], or 12, 10 [rounds in a contest], whatever they feel like.” She added: “The WBC wasn’t aligned with that. So I said, ”You know what, I have other organisations that are supporting me.”

“The Real Deal” spoke about more boxers following her lead and campaigning for women to have the choice of two or three-minute rounds: “I hope so. I took my stance. I believe in it and I hope other women believe that we do have a choice. And if they believe in it they will do the same thing.”

Serrano also discussed a potential rematch with Taylor and expressed her confidence in the outcome, regardless of round distance: “For Katie, if she doesn’t want to do the three minutes, I will accept it and do the two – because I think this time I will get the knockout!”

Attention now turns to March 2, where Serrano will have her 50th professional bout in her Puerto Rico homecoming.
