John Hedges vs. Pat Brown press conference quotes and fight prediction

John Hedges (12-0, 3 KOs) and Pat Brown (6-0, 6 KOs) will soon clash for the vacant British and Commonwealth cruiserweight titles.

Their bout headlines a Matchroom Boxing card at the Co-op Live in Manchester, England. Fight fans around the world will be able to catch the action live on DAZN.

Both men spoke at a press conference ahead of their Sept. 19 contest. Below is some of what they had to say.

“Coming here, Co-op Live, this is absolutely crazy,” said Hedges. “I’ll be absolutely real with you. Lifelong dream to get anywhere close to this, never mind doing it meself. Been in the game a lot of years. Done it since I’ve been a five-year-old. Like I say, people have different dreams in the boxing world and what they want to achieve. But genuinely, when I say I was happy to fight on telly and walk away, that was the sort of mentality I had. I’ve always never really backed meself a lot. But slowly, slowly, started winning fights, getting through them with ease, and now look, I’m here…”

“They do say pressure is a privilege. But listen, I’ve still got pressure on my shoulders. I know what I want to achieve in this sport and it’s more than a British title, if I’m honest with you. I know what I want to get to. I know what I’m capable of, but it’s just one of them things. When you get in there, we’ve seen it time and time again, it’s a lot of pressure put on your shoulders…If this was back in London, I’d feel the pressure a little bit more, but it doesn’t really change a lot.”

“It’s obviously massive,” said Brown. “I’ve had fights in stadiums. Been in the AO before, so, I’ve been here [in large venue events]. I’ve envisioned it. I know the long walkouts, know the big change in rooms. So I’m not really getting it to me head to be honest with ya. It’s brilliant, obviously. It’s what you dream of, isn’t it? But all I know is the fight game. All this stuff is brilliant, but all I’m focusing on is Saturday night. I can’t wait now. It’s nearly here.”

“Every fight I put 110 per cent in, especially against John. This camp, like some touched upon, sparring is difficult but I’ve made sure I got the bodies in who fit his style and I really have done everything in this camp. So I can sit back now and happily look forward to the fight. And listen, the British title, it brings the dog out in people, don’t it? That’s what’s going to happen Saturday. I know there’s a dog in John…But come Saturday night, make no mistake about it, I’m coming with a full force. I’m sure Johnny’s as well and yeah, let’s get it on.”

Fight prediction

From Big Fight Weekend’s Ricky Carroll: How far Brown can go in the pro ranks remains to be seen, but the heavy-hitting cruiserweight cannot be in a boring fight. He has an aggressive come-forward style, while carrying explosive power in both hands. Brown is not reckless, which comes with his extensive amateur background. He controls the distance well in his fights, using his jab. He looks comfortable fighting at range or inside, throwing huge bombs.

Hedges is awkward and will look to frustrate Brown by picking his punches and moving. He needs to be elusive and move, keeping Brown guessing. If he stands straight in front of Brown, and the Mancunian lands, that could be all she wrote! Hedges has plenty of ability and has the tools to frustrate Brown. However, he needs to pick his punches and make Brown second-guess his own work.
