All results from the George Liddard vs Dario Morello main fight card
Jimmy Sains vs Tom Cowling
Next up on the George Liddard vs Dario Morello undercard was Jimmy Sains (13-0, 10 KOs) vs Tom Cowling (15-2, 4 KOs) for the vacant Commonwealth middleweight title.
Sains began by pushing out a double jab to control the distance. That jab did control the tempo well in the opening three minutes, but Cowling did land a cuffing right hand. Cowling had his small pockets of success in the second, but Sains continued to use his jab and work effectively off it.
Cowling began to land more effectively in the third round, punching between Sains’s work. Despite Sains enjoying the busier round in the fifth round, Cowling had plenty of success when he let his shots go, especially the left hand.
With Sains on top in the sixth, Cowling landed a beautifully timed body shot, which had the Essex fighter in all kinds of trouble, but he showed his bravery to bite down on his gumshield, fight back and hang on when needed to ensure he heard the bell.
Massive credit to Sains in the seventh round, where he took some shots, but used his jab well to keep Cowling off, and landed a big body shot, which hurt Cowling, who began to hang on towards the end of the three minutes. The better quality punches came from Cowling in the ninth round, but Sains was the busier of the fighters as we headed into the later rounds of the fight.
Over the next two rounds, the pace dropped, but Sains continued to box well, with Cowling landing the better punches, but just not doing enough for us to win many of these rounds. For the remainder of the fight, Sains used the lead left hand effectively, stopping Cowling from closing the distance regularly. Sains came through a huge moment in the sixth round and did not allow Cowling to capitalise on that moment. The judges’ scorecards read 119-109 x2 and 118-110, all in favour of Jimmy Sains, who is the new Commonwealth middleweight champion.
Tiah Mai Ayton vs Ellie Hellewell
The first fight on the George Liddard vs Dario Morello saw the exciting Tiah Mai Ayton (7-0, 6 KOs) face Ellie Hellewell (8-2-1, 1 KO) for the vacant Commonwealth featherweight title.
Ayton started the brighter, applying pressure in the first round and succeeding. The speed and volume continued from Ayton into the second round, with Hellewell struggling to land anything of note.
Hellewell continued to have her moments with single shots, but the speed of Ayton was the standout, with her variety of punches impressing. The fifth round was a big one for Ayton as she ended the round in the ascendancy and landed a series of heavy punches. At the end of the sixth round, the corner of Hellwell had seen enough and withdrew their fighter, with it only going one way! Ayton is now the new Commonwealth champion, winning by seventh-round TKO.
