Rolly Romero vs. Teófimo López fight recap

Teófimo López (23-2, 13 KOs) added another championship belt to his collection with a majority decision win against Rolly Romero (17-3, 13 KOs).

Although one judge had it 114-114, the other two saw it 116-112 and 115-113. López is now the WBA welterweight world champion with the victory. He was previously a unified titlist at lightweight and the WBO super lightweight world champion.

Both men spent much of the opening round out of range of each other, connecting on very little. López pressed forward in an attempt to close the distance and land his shots. Romero seemed content with moving off the back foot. He sought to counter when possible, but opportunities to do so did not present themselves often.

A left hook caused a cut by the right eye of López in round five. Not long after its appearance, he was hit with a right hand over the top that rocked him. It allowed Romero to follow up with several hard power shots to the head, but López was able to stay on his feet for the final minute of the fifth round.

Despite dominating in the fifth, Romero struggled to find similar success for the rest of the fight. He allowed López to come forward and outwork him. The challenger may not have landed a high volume of punches, but he clearly established himself as the aggressor and consistently went to the body. Romero was simply not active enough to win a majority of these rounds. It came as no surprise when López was ultimately announced as the victor.

Undercard on DAZN and Prime Video PPV results

Yoenli Hernández (11-0, 9 KOs) won a majority decision against Francisco Verón (17-2-1, 10 KOs) in a 10-round middleweight contest. Although one judge had it 95-95, the other two saw it 99-91 and 98-92.

Gary Antonio Russell (22-1, 13 KOs, 1 NC) won a unanimous decision against Victor Santillán (16-3, 7 KOs). Scores for their 12-round super bantamweight fight were 119-108 (x2) and 118-109. Santillán was knocked down in the twelfth by a right hook to the head.

Carlos Utria (15-0, 11 KOs) won a split decision against Israel Mercado (13-2-2, 7 KOs) in a 10-round super lightweight bout. Although one judge had it 96-94 for Mercado, the other two saw it 97-93 and 96-94 for Utria.

Undercard on YouTube results

On a portion of the undercard that was broadcast on YouTube, Marco Romero (15-0, 13 KOs) won via first round technical knockout against Kahlil Mitchell (6-2, 4 KOs). The official time of stoppage for this eight-round middleweight fight was 2:33. Mitchell was stopped standing after getting hit with a barrage of punches.

Joseph Brown (8-0, 5 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Alton Wiggins (3-3-1, 0 KOs). Scores for their six-round super welterweight clash were 60-54 across the board.

Opening the broadcast on YouTube, Aldo Blancas (3-0, 2 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Ricky Mamone (0-1-1, 0 KOs). Scores for their four-round super lightweight bout were 40-35 and 39-36 (x2). Mamone was dropped in the second by a left hook to the body.

Result of fight that was not broadcast

On a portion of the undercard that was not broadcast, Benjamin Johnson (8-0, 7 KOs, 1 NC) won a unanimous decision against José Rodríguez (4-4-1, 3 KOs). Scores for their six-round welterweight clash were 60-54 (x2) and 59-55.
