Jaime Munguía vs. Erik Bazinyan Recap

The opening round started slowly, with both looking to establish their jab before Bazinyan landed an eye-catching right hand while Munguía landed a nice-looking counter left hand. Over the next two rounds, both fighters were sharp with their punches – with Bazinyan landing a nice counter left in the second while the Mexican fighter applied good pressure in round three, picking his punches impressively.

Rounds four and five saw Munguía continue to apply pressure and have small pockets of success, but the jab of Bazinyan was eye-catching and effective. The Armenian-born fighter was impressing with the accuracy of his work, which was edging most of the rounds in his favour. Round six was a much better round for the Tijuana native – as he pressured his opponent effectively, landing some eye-catching combinations which hurt Bazinyan, especially the work to the body.

The seventh was another strong round for the Mexican as he stunned Bazinyan with a flurry of punches, including some eye-catching right hands. The Canadian resident recovered well and landed some nice counters towards the end of the round. Round 10 saw the Mexican come out more aggressively before Bazinyan answered with a good combination. A heavy left hook to the liver hurt the Armenian-born fighter before Munguía showed poise and picked his punches well, forcing his opponent down to the canvas and unable to beat the count. It was a tough night for the Mexican, but he showed his heart and courage to overcome difficult moments and win by tenth round KO.

Post Fight Quotes

In the post-fight interview through an interpreter, Munguía said: “It was a fight I had to do intelligently. He’s strong. He hits hard. So, we had to break him down and be careful with shots to the body. And in the 10th round, that’s when I decided to come out with everything. And that’s how we got the knockout.”

He continued: “There are great things to come, great fights at 168 pounds. There’s Caleb Plant, {Edgar} Berlanga, Christian Mbilli. There are great fights, and we will give great wars as well.”

Bazinyan also spoke after the fight and said: “I felt like I was winning. I felt he was very frustrated with my jab, right hand, and counters. He was getting tired. All of a sudden, I got caught. I don’t know what happened there.”
