Jaime Munguía Impresses Against John Ryder With Dominating Performance

Jaime Munguía (43-0, 34 KOs) continued his super middleweight journey with a ninth-round TKO win over John Ryder (32-7, 18 KOs).

The clash headlined a Jan. 27 event at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, AZ. Golden Boy Promotions promoted the fight in collaboration with Matchroom Boxing. Munguía fought for the first time since a unanimous decision win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko. This was Ryder’s first bout since a loss to Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez.

Jaime Munguía Dominates Ryder

Both fighters used the first round to settle into the fight. With more than a minute to go in the second, Munguía dropped Ryder with a right hand. The former super welterweight champion kept up the pressure, but Ryder was able to stay on his feet for the rest of the round. Munguía continued pursuing the stoppage in the third. However, “The Gorilla” not only stayed standing but fired off some impressive shots. Despite this, Munguía appeared unfazed by anything Ryder landed.

During the fourth round, Ryder was dropped again while coming forward by Munguía’s lead hand. As the fight went on, the Tijuana native’s dominance only grew. Despite having less experience at super middleweight than Ryder, Munguía’s shots were doing the greater damage.

Early in the ninth round, Ryder went to the canvas for the third time in the fight. Munguía continued to pile the pressure and dropped his opponent once again. At this point, Ryder’s trainer, Tony Sims, was signalling his intention to halt the fight. However, referee Wes Melton did not notice the towel in his hand and allowed the bout to continue following the second knockdown in the ninth. Eventually, the timekeeper rang the bell, and Melton called an end to the fight. The official time of stoppage was 1:25.

Post Fight Quotes

In the post-fight interview, Munguía said: “I worked really hard for this.”

He continued: “Last time (against Sergiy Derevyanchenko), I was throwing punches like crazy, but this time my timing was perfect. Ryder was a great fighter, but we’re ready to keep on going.

With the win, Munguía continues to establish himself as one of the world’s top super middleweights. As has been the case for the last couple of years, there will be calls for him to focus on getting a world title shot. For now, he moves on to his 43rd consecutive victory.
