Countdown to Cinco de Mayo Clash: Canelo Opens Up on Jaime Munguía Showdown and Potential David Benavidez Clash

On Saturday, May 4, Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will face Tijuana native Jaime Munguía (43-0, 34 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as the headline for the PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video and DAZN PPV. The two have already met at a press conference, and now Canelo has spoken to Dan Rafael on the Big Fight Weekend preview podcast ahead of his next fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Alvarez Addresses Temporary Split from PBC

Describing his feelings as we approach fight week, he said: “I feel great, I feel ready.” He continued: “I feel better than ever.”

When asked about switching his camp to Lake Tahoe: “The altitude. I feel great when I train in the altitude.” He continued: “It’s a very relaxed place, we have everything we need and my training camp has gone really good.”

Rafael then asked Canelo about the temporary break from PBC: “I always like to work with everybody, and especially right now with Al Haymon. He always treats me really good, all the team at PBC.” He continued: “Things happen, but nothing bad. I said if you don’t have anything right now, I can find other things to fight next May.”

Why Munguía and Not Charlo?

Addressing a potential fight with Jermall Charlo: “A fight with Charlo is not exciting for the fans after his brother (Jermell) do what he do in the fight,” said Canelo.

When asked about the thinking behind the Munguía fight and if his performance against John Ryder impacted that: “I think that fight made everything interesting.” He continued: “I think he deserves a shot. He looked good.” Alvarez added: “It’s going to be a good fight, especially because for the first time two Mexican fighters – fighting for the four belts.”

“I think the people want this fight and its history for Mexico,” Canelo said.

Canelo Alvarez: Knockouts and David Benavidez

When asked about taking the 0 from an undefeated fighter, the Mexican legend said: “Yes, it’s special for me. I motivate myself a lot because I love boxing and I love being involved in these kind of fights. He’s a really good fighter. He’s undefeated and I’m involved in another great fight.” He continued: “I’m excited, I’m going to win May 4 and still continue to make history.”

When asked about the lack of recent knockouts in his fight, and if he’s feeling anxious about that: “We always prepare ourselves for a knockout, that’s for sure. But you know, when it doesn’t come I’m prepared for everything.”

Asked about David Benavidez, and the potential of fighting him in the future: “I always fight with everybody and always with the people they say I do not want to fight. I’m always involved in those kinds of fights and right now I’m in the position, I can do whatever I want, and I do not want to give that opportunity to him because he brings 20lbs more than me on fight night.” 

Ending the interview on the upcoming fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend, Canelo said: “It’s going to be a good fight. His style is really good. my style is really good, to be a good fight, but I’m gonna win.”
