Jack Catterall Speaks out After Josh Taylor Fight Postponement

Jack Catterall (28-1, 13 KOs) and Josh Taylor (19-1, 13 KOs) had finally agreed to a rematch at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on April 27, but Matchroom Boxing have now confirmed the event will be postponed – due to a reported eye injury sustained by Taylor. The fight will now take place on May 25 at the same venue, live on DAZN. Catterall has spoken out regarding the cancellation via his X account.

The two long-standing rivals have been going back and forth on social media since Taylor’s controversial split decision win in their first fight. Many in the boxing world have called for the rematch, and Catterall has had his say on the cancellation, via his X account: “Apologies to all the fans, I’ll be there May 25th.” The Chorley native added: “All he’s done is stalled the beating he’s going to get and I promise you all I will rid this guy out of boxing once and for all.”

Despite the disappointing news, it’s reassuring the Matchroom has already announced a new date, which suggests the injury to the Scottish fighter is not too serious. This much-anticipated rematch has been close for two years, and many will hope we see this grudge match settled in May.

Since his loss to Taylor, “El Gato” has bounced back with wins against Darragh Foley and Jorge Linares. Taylor has only fought once since, which was a unanimous decision defeat against Teofimo Lopez, making both largely inactive since they fought each other.

Stacked Boxing Schedule

The rescheduled fight ensures the two will be part of a stacked schedule, with Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk fighting on May 18 for the undisputed heavyweight championship, and Artur Beterbiev and Dmitrii Bivol are thought to be fighting on June 1.
