On this day, October 14, 2017: Jermell Charlo delivered stunning first-round knockout
The career of Jermell Charlo has seen some unquestionable highs and disappointing defeats. He has endured plenty of lows outside the ring, but his talent when at his best saw him become the undisputed super welterweight champion. One of his most memorable wins came on October 14, 2017, when he scored a brutal first-round KO of Erickson Lubin.
Jermell Charlo brutally stops Lubin in round one
Charlo won the vacant WBC super welterweight title against John Jackson. “Iron Man” was down on all three scorecards (64-69 x3) when he landed a big right hand that rocked Jackson, who seemingly tried to fix his mouth guard, but was met by two huge left hooks that prompted the referee to jump in and wave the fight off.
He then successfully defended his title, stopping Charles Hatley in round six. He then moved on to face Lubin at the Barclays Center.
Very little happened in the first two minutes before Charlo landed a huge right hand, that left Lubin a crumpled heap, unable to make it to his feet, with Harvey Dock waving the fight off mid count.
What happened after Lubin win
Following the win over Lubin, Charlo defeated Austin Trout before he was beaten by Tony Harrison. “Iron Man” returned to the ring six months later, stopping Jorge Cota in the third round. He then got revenge against Tony Harrison, stopping him in the eleventh round.
A win over Jeison Rosario followed, before the split draw against Brian Castano. The rematch against Castano gave him undisputed glory before his career ground to a halt, and he only returned to challenge Canelo at super middleweight, losing by unanimous decision, with scorecards of 109-118, 109-118, 108-119.

The Big Fight Weekend verdict on Jermell Charlo
Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) has been involved in various legal situations, which undoubtedly slowed down his activity in recent years. After beating Brian Castano to become the undisputed champion in 2022, he has only fought once and was dominated and dropped by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Whether we see Jermell fight again remains to be seen, but at his best, he ruled the super welterweight division, becoming the division’s first undisputed champion in the four-belt era. He showed his power, but his slick footwork and sharp counterpunching allow him to control the distance in his fights and step in to punish defensive lapses from his opponents.
