Top Rank Confirms Tyson Fury Against Chisora December 3rd

What had been rumored, and even laughed at, for WBC heavyweight champ Tyson Fury’s next opponent is now a reality for early December. This, as Thursday morning brought confirmation that Fury will fight fellow countryman Derek Chisora at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London on December 3rd.

Queensberry Promotions and Top Rank Rank Boxing, who co-promote Fury, made the announcement Thursday morning London time,

Why Tyson Fury wanted to Fight Chisora

In the Queensberry release, promoter Frank Warren touted the date and the choice of opponent,

“I am thrilled to be delivering a Tyson Fury world title defense in front of the British fans in London,” said promoter Frank Warren. “Tyson clearly conquered America across his trilogy with Deontay Wilder and there is also huge demand to stage his fights from sites across the world,” Warren said.

“Tyson wanted to fight in his home country again this year following his special night at Wembley Stadium in April. This brings us to the magnificent Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and a match against an old rival in Derek Chisora.

Derek, also a big favorite with British fans, has reinvented himself in recent years and Tyson has long stated his wish to fight him for a third time.”

We wrote previously in early August about the possibility of Fury fighting Chisora again, as the “Gypsy King” first started posting on social media in playful suggestion of fighting Chisora.

Fury took to Instagram to tell his fans and boxing media/observers that his third WBC title defense is going to be with Chisora saying to Chisora in the video, “I spoke to your team. Everything is sorted, looking good. Contract will be over to your team in the next day or so.”

Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum had debunked the video the next day saying our insider Dan Rafael,

“He’s having fun,” Arum told Fight Freaks Unite about Fury. “He gets up in the morning. He figures what kind of shit to stir up and he says whatever he thinks. And because he gets so many hits on all these (social media) platforms he has a built in audience. If he got up tomorrow and said he’s coming back to fight X and that the only person that he’ll trust to train him is Bob Arum, he’s capable of saying that.”

We’ll, it turns out that, despite negotiating with former unified champ Anthony Joshua about a possible December fight, Chisora is the choice. The Manchester Evening News in England was the first to have Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the site for Fury-Chisora on December 3rd.

Fury wants to continue his momentum

Fury, 32-0-1, 23 KOs, was last in the ring in April scoring a thunderous KO of Dillian Whyte before a record U.K. crowd of 94,000+ fans at Wembley Stadium. He had continued to maintain that he was done with boxing, but not many took that seriously. Fury is regarded as the best heavyweight in the world having previously beaten WBC champ Deontay Wilder by KO in February 2020 and again by KO in their fight in October 2021.

As for Chisora, 33-12, 23 KOs, he’s been around as a contender/opponent for a myriad of heavyweights, having lost to Dillian Whyte twice, Anthony Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk and even, Fury twice prior. This, as Fury stopped Chisora in the 10th round in November 2014 and earlier in their careers, Fury won by 12 round decision July 2011.

The 38 year old Chisora stopped a three fight losing streak by beating fellow aging vet Kubrat Pulev by 12 round, split decision on July 9th.

Fury has previously beaten Chsora by TKO and by decision in non-title bouts earlier in their careers.

One more intriguing part of the decision to fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December is that’s an outdoor soccer venue that doesn’t have a roof. So, the British winter time temperatures will likely be an issue.

However, the massive, state of the art venue seats over 65,000 and hosted the first Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua heavyweight title bout in September or 2021, And, importantly, it’s available in December due to the English Premier League soccer taking time off for the World Cup.
