What’s Next For Sergio Garcia?
He wasn’t a household name, but several know the name of Sergio Garcia as he looks to see what is next for him in the ring following his defeat to Sebastian Fundora earlier this month.
Now that he’s had some time to reflect and watch game tape, Garcia felt he put out a solid effort.
“I think we did a good job against Fundora. The main problem we had is that he was very tall, and that surprised us more than we thought,” Victor Iglesias, trainer for Sergio Garcia, told Emilio Marquiegui.
The contest which Garcia lost by unanimous decision to Fundora you can attribute to Garcia’s preparation, as he mentioned, and the fact that both in the fight didn’t do much of consequence in the tactical matchup they had at Staples Center. Not too many 6’5 super welterweights to go practice for, so instead, Garcia is left with the ultimate “what if” he had gotten by Fundora in their title eliminator matchup.
“In the sporting aspect [the loss to Fundora] is a slowdown, and also in the economic sense as well. Sebastian Fundora against Erickson Lubin, in the eliminator before the world title shot, [Garcia could have] collected half a million dollars; what a purse we could have achieved,” Garcia stated.
So what is next for Garcia? Iglesias hopes for a return call back to fight in America. If not, the following plan would be to chase after the European title.
“I think they were satisfied with our performance and will call us to fight in the United States. Let’s see what they offer us,” Iglesias said.
Whichever route Garcia chooses next, one thing for sure is after his fight with Fundora. We have newfound questions, however they will be answered the next time Fundora is in action to see if styles make fights or if the matchup with Garcia was just a one-off scenario. Either way, Garcia is a name that can still be seen in the short future as he looks to rebound.
