Berchelt headlines in Mexico Saturday night

Boxing continues for the second straight Saturday night in Mexico City with WBC Super Featherweight Champion, Miguel Berchelt, in non-title action, for the first time since the Covid-19 shut down in March.

Berchelt will headline for Top Rank boxing in Mexico City at the TV Azteca Studios, just as countryman Emanuel Navarrete did last Saturday night:

Berchelt, 37-1, 33 KOs, is expected to dominate Eleazar Valenzuela in their scheduled 10-round non-title contest. Valenzuela comes in with a 21-13-4 record, but has won eight of his last 12 fights.

Meanwhile, Berchelt will be in the ring the first time, since he successfully defended his WBC 130 lb. title with a fourth round knockout of Jason Sosa in Carson, California last November. Berchelt won the belt from Francisco Vargas in January of 2017 and has successfully defended it six times with five coming by knockout. That includes a rematch win over Vargas (photo above) last May in Tucson, Arizona.

Berchelt is still aiming for a unified title fight potentially with IBF champ, American JoJo Diaz. Or, he could also end up fighting another Top Rank promoted fighter, WBO 130 lb. title holder, Jamel Herring.

However, Herring is trying to reschedule his fight with little regarded, Jonathan Oquendo for July at the Top Rank “bubble” in Las Vegas. This after the American, former Marnie tested positive a week ago for Covid-19 and having the fight for next Thursday night delayed.

This will be the second straight Saturday night that fights will be at the studio ring for Mexico’s popular sports channel, TV Azteca. Seven days ago, Navarrete, who is the WBO 122 lb. title holder made his featherweight debut and demolished journeyman Uriel Lopez by 6th round TKO. It is believed that Navarrete may fight again, as soon as, late August for Top Rank.

Finally, the co-feature Saturday night has Omar “Pollo” Aguilar (17-0, 16 KOs), a 21-year-old punching prodigy from Ensenada, Mexico, battling  Dante  Jardon (32-6, 23 KOs) in a 10-rounder at Jr. Welterweight.
