‘Boots’ Ennis reveals hopeful timeline for next fight and teases opponent
On June 27, at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, Xander Zayas vs Boots Ennis headlined a Matchroom Boxing card in association with Top Rank for Zayas’ WBO/WBA super welterweight title, live on DAZN. Ennis produced a career-best performance, winning by seventh-round stoppage. Speculation continues about who Ennis will face next, and while appearing on the Ariel Helwani Show, Boots revealed a planned timeline while teasing a potential opponent.
Jaron Boots Ennis becomes 154 unified champion against Xander Zayas
Ennis (36-0, 32 KOs) started quickly, scoring a knockdown in the first round with a well-timed left hand and was well on top when Zayas (23-1, 13 KOs) landed two big right hands in the third round, seemingly rocking Ennis. However, Boots appeared to have his legs back under him by the end of the round.
“Boots” showcased his power again in the fifth round, knocking Zayas down. The rest of the round was as one-sided as you are likely to see. Zayas dug deep and somehow survived the round.
Round seven was the end of the road for Zayas, with Boots scoring another knockdown. This led the corner of Zayas to withdraw their fighter, crowning “Boots” Ennis the new unified WBO/WBA super welterweight champion.
Boots Ennis teases timeline for next fight
What comes next for Boots Ennis is something many in boxing are wondering. Rumours of ongoing talks between Ennis and WBC champion Sebastian Fundora (24-1-1, 16 KOs) were quickly rubbished, but the fight was not dismissed.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani, Boots revealed the options for his next fight and a potential timeline for that bout:
“It’s between Fundora and (Vergil) Ortiz. I feel like Fundora is a big fight because he’s got a belt, and he’s 6’5” or something like that.
“To be honest, everybody knows how me and Ortiz are gonna go.
“Hopefully, I get back in there this year, maybe November or December.”
