Chantelle Cameron Spoils Katie Taylor Homecoming In Narrow Win

All connected to Big Fight Weekend were excited to see current undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor step up in weight to tackle undisputed super lightweight queen Chantelle Cameron. When asked at the final press conference about the magnitude of this fight, Taylor didn’t hold back. “This isn’t any normal fight, it’s Undisputed Champion vs Undisputed Champion.” The fight did not disappoint, with both fighters going to war, with Cameron retaining her undefeated record.

The fight capped the Matchroom boxing card on DAZN, with Chantelle Cameron defeating Katie Taylor via a points decision Saturday night in Taylor’s backyard of Dublin, Ireland,

The crowd were at their partisan best and raised the roof when Taylor was introduced before the first bell. Cameron looked to get her jab going early on, but Taylor landed some eye-catching combinations. Cameron landed some nice left hooks on the inside and put Taylor under good pressure towards the end of the round. Round two began with the English fighter on the front foot, but the Irish fighter again landed some eye-catching combinations. The undisputed lightweight champion landed a great right hand, which sealed the round for her.

Rounds 3 and 4 were impressive rounds for Cameron as she continued to be the aggressor and walked Taylor down, working the body on the inside. Taylor continued to do her best work in the middle of the ring, but the Northampton-born fighter looked confident in her strategy and continued to walk down her opponent and land some good shoots.

Round five saw Cameron showcase her impressive inside work as she landed some great body shots, but Taylor showed her bravery by firing back. Round six saw the best round of the fight, as both fighters stood in the middle of the ring and traded, with Taylor’s hand speed and combinations winning the round. But what a war this is turning into! Rounds seven and eight were back and forth with Cameron continually walking down Taylor and winning the inside battle. The Irish fighter showed great heart and courage by continually fighting back and landing punches.

Round nine saw continued aggression and great inside work from Cameron. The bravery from Taylor was staggering in the last two rounds, but Cameron again showed her incredible work rate and exceptional work on the inside. The final bell sounded with both women convinced they had won.

As the judge’s scorecards were read by David Diamante, it was confirmed Chantelle Cameron had wrecked Katie Taylor’s homecoming winning the fight (95-95,96-94 and 96-94) and remaining the undisputed super lightweight champion.

“She’s the best women boxer there is, and I turned up to the occasion,” Cameron said to DAZN in the ring.

Following the fight, Taylor was full of praise for her opponent. “Congratulations to Chantelle on her performance, I look forward to the rematch.” Cameron made it clear she gave her best. “I turned up to the occasion.” 

Cameron was superb as was Taylor, but it just felt like the English fighter had done enough for the win.

The win further propels Cameron in the women’s 140 lb. division, meanwhile, Taylor off her first defeat will likely to turn to a rematch at lightweight with Puerto Rico’s Amanda Serrano later this year. Those two fought an epic 10 rounder last April won by Taylor at Madison Square Garden in New York.
