‘This Is What I Hope to Have’: Turki Alalshikh Reveals Fight He Wants to Make
In an interview with Ade Oladipo for Matchroom Boxing, Turki Alalshikh spoke on a number of issues, including the success of Riyadh Season and his desire to make the biggest fights and most entertaining shows. During the interview, he spoke on his vision for what comes next for the winner of Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev. Turki Alalshikh Discusses Plans for the Future Including Bivol vs. Beterbiev
At the beginning of the interview, Turki Alalshikh spoke about his love for his job and creating the most entertaining events. He said: “I’ve had a lot of health issues in the last five years. This makes me want to do everything and see it in my life.”
He described his love for boxing and his desire to make it more popular by attracting the younger generation through good music, good promotion, and “a lot of things.” He confirmed his desire to “make the fights that people want to see it.” He referred to the advancing ages of Fury, Joshua, Usyk, Wilder and Beterbiev and exclaimed: “Why are we losing time.” He added: “The people need to see Joshua-Fury, Fury-Joshua, need to see Joshua-Wilder.“
His Excellency also described more fights he would like to see and said: “We need to see Artur-Bivol.” He continued: “I want to see the result (winner) of Artur and Bivol play against (Jai) Opetaia.” Ade then clarified, and the Chairman of General Authority for Entertainment confirmed: “Yes, this is what I hope to have.“
Looking Ahead in 2024
His Excellency spoke about the immeasurable support he’s received from the king and crown prince and referred to them as “two big mountains.” He clarified what they are doing would not be possible without their support. When asked how 2024 looks for boxing, he spoke about the desire to see the rematch between Fury and Usyk and the possibility of a second fight between Fury and Ngannou. His Excellency added: “We want to see if Fury wins, we want to see him against Joshua if Joshua wins (against Ngannou). If Usyk wins, maybe we have a chance to have third fight. And even if Usyk wins, the people still want to see Tyson against Joshua.“
Turki Alalshikh spoke about his love for boxing from his childhood. He also addressed the coming together of Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren and referred to them as “Good People.” When asked what fight he’s most looking forward to the most, he touched on the heavyweight matchup between Usyk and Fury. But he said as a fan, he wants to see Beterbiev vs. Bivol. He also described his plans to create boxing video games, movies and spoke of his upcoming documentary on the greatest 40 legends in boxing.
Near the end of the interview, His Excellency mentioned who his favourite fighter was: “Larry Holmes and Roberto Duran.”
The interview is a fascinating watch from start to finish and a really great insight into a man who has breathed life into the Sweet Science. 2024 and beyond looks set to be a golden period for the sport.
