Title Fights From Around the World: Yesica Nery Plata Records Narrow Victory in Germany

Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews, and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts – from around the world from the past week.

The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. Today’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of just one recap. Over in Germany, Yesica Nery Plata made a successful defence of her unified light flyweight titles.

Yesica Nery Płata Successfully Defends Her WBA and WBC Straps

Yesica Nery Plata (30-2, 3 KOs) won a split decision over Sarah Bormann (17-1, 7 KOs) at the Weihnachtscirkus in Karlsruhe, Germany. A score of 95-94 for Bormann – was overruled by cards of 97-92 and 96-93 for Plata. The win ensured the Mexican fighter retained her WBA and WBC light flyweight titles.

The December 16 bout streamed live on DAZN (except in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania). This was Plata’s first defence of her unified status following a win over Kim Clavel in January this year. She became the WBA champion with a split decision win over Yesica Yolanda Bopp in March 2022.

Bormann applied pressure from the beginning, but Plata was the more accurate of the two. The German did not relent and continued this approach – doing little to phase her opponent. Plata also had quite a bit of success going down to the body.

The reigning champion lost a point in round nine for disobeying the referee’s instructions. In the tenth, Plata’s punches caused Bormann’s mouthpiece to come out. Despite this, the two continued to trade as they had been.

The fight can be described – as one where both fighters gave it their all, but the accuracy of Plata got her over the line. Bormann applied pressure throughout the fight but missed a number of punches. Plata’s work to the body and her combination of hooks and uppercuts helped her secure victory.
