Sunny Edwards vs. Galal Yafai: Three Key Ways to Win for ‘Showtime’

On November 30 at the bp pulse LIVE, Birmingham, Sunny Edwards (21-1, 4 KOs) will meet Olympic 2020 gold medallist Galal Yafai (8-0, 6 KOs) for the vacant WBC interim world flyweight title. The Matchroom Boxing card – will be shown live on DAZN. As we build up to fight night, Big Fight Weekend look at three ways Edwards can defeat Yafai.

Three Key Strategies for Sunny Edwards to Defeat Galal Yafai

Timing of Punches

Edwards is an exceptional fighter who has showcased silky skills throughout his career, but one of his best attributes is timing. If his opponent allows him to find his timing, it’s proven to be a long and frustrating night for all opponents apart from Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez. “Bam” controlled the distance brilliantly against Sunny, using his jab, which never allowed the Brit to find his timing, stopping him from pinning down Rodriguez to obtain a foothold in the fight.

Yafai can be easy to hit on occasions, and if Edwards can find his timing, he is capable of outboxing his rival for 12 rounds.

Use of Footwork

Sunny has never been known for his punching power – but he is capable of bamboozling his opponents with his slick footwork. His impressive footwork enables him to get in and out of range at the most effective times. His most recent win was against Adrien Curiel, where Edwards showed his slick footwork, often frustrating his opponent, who couldn’t close the distance.

Rodriguez negated this by effectively walking Edwards down, outworking him, and forcing his strengths on Sunny, which is something Yafai will have to do if he wants to get past the strengths of “Showtime.”

Experience

Yafai enjoyed a stellar amateur career, including winning the gold medal at the 2020 Olympics. Edwards, on the other hand, has mixed at a high level in the professional ranks, recording impressive wins against world-class operators such as Felix Alvarado and Moruti Mthalane.

In these fights and others, he has shown an excellent ability to control the distance. In the defeat to Rodriguez, “Showtime” showed just how tough he is. Yafai is clearly a talented fighter who works hard in his fights and carries plenty of power. The experience in the professional ranks that Edwards has will be a huge advantage on fight night. The Birmingham fighter will need a career-best performance to win this.
