Spence victorious in mega fight against Garcia

IBF Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. took on Mikey Garcia last night in front of a big crowd of 47,525 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. In the first mega-fight pay-per-view of the year, “The Truth” was absolutely in control of the fight against Mikey Garcia from what was as soon as the bell rang. What Garcia lacked in strength in power coming up two weight classes to challenge Spence in this fight, made up for in determination but as the night grew on, it wasn’t going to be enough for Garcia to overcome.

The big question for Garcia coming into this fight was will he be able to use his speed and footwork to keep Spence at bay. For the opening feeling out rounds, he was somewhat able to. The difference was Garcia’s output in those rounds was nowhere to be seen, and Spence’s game plan of establishing the jab and attacking the body seemed to be the emphasis of the entire fight.

By the later rounds, Spence was able to establish control, and while Garcia wasn’t going to go down, he seemed not only to be able to land but was also overmatched by Spence who was able to connect when he could as he was throwing punches in bunches throughout the fight. The final Compubox totals shown for Spence that he had thrown a career-high 1,082 punches and landing 345 of them. These were also the most number of shots Garcia took in his career.

At the end of 12 punishing rounds for Garcia, he not only took in the ring but also on the scorecards as the judges had it 120-107, 120-108 and 120-108 in favor of Spence by unanimous decision victory.

What is next for Spence is going to be interesting, as Manny Pacquiao in attendance for the fight, met Spence in the ring and issued a challenge to a hesitant crowd reaction. With both guys being on Premier Boxing Champions stable, this may seem like the next fight for Spence if he doesn’t take on the winner of Porter-Thruman 2 if that comes to fruition.

For Garcia coming up two weight classes for this fight and suffering the 1st loss of his career, he more than likely will go back to his natural weight class of lightweight and go back after the belt he vacated which is currently in the hands of Richard Commey.
