Skye Nicolson Cruises to World Title Win

Skye Nicolson (10-0, 1 KO) cruised to victory en route to claiming the WBC featherweight title against Sarah Mahfoud (14-2, 3 KOs).

Australia’s Nicolson won a unanimous decision with scores of 100-90 (x2) and 99-91. The fight took place on the undercard of Richardson Hitchins’ clash against Gustavo Lemos. DAZN were the broadcasters for this Matchroom Boxing card at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. With the win, Nicolson is the latest to become featherweight champion.

Fight Recap

The bout began with both fighters staying at range of each other. From time to time, they would lunge at each other in an attempt to land one of their shots. Nicolson was landing the more accurate punches. Mahfoud struggled to get close, leaving her unable to put many shots together.

Nicolson was dominant in every round. Her footwork and accuracy gave Mahfoud significant trouble. In the end, this wound up being a fight with not a lot of activity, mainly due to the Australian’s ability to keep her opponent at bay with her long reach. Rather than throw a high volume of punches, Nicolson chose to throw singular, accurate shots. It was enough to give her a wide unanimous decision.

“It means everything,” said Nicolson after the fight. “I wasn’t going to be deprived of this moment. I wanted this moment here in the ring.”

“I’m ready when she’s ready,” she said about a clash with WBO, IBF and WBA champion Amanda Serrano. “Obviously, I want the belts, so, it’s nothing personal Amanda, but, I am ready when you are.”

Undercard Results

Marc Castro (12-0, 8 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Abraham Montoya (22-6-1, 14 KOs). Scores for this 10-round super featherweight bout were 100-90, 98-92 and 97-93.

In a six-round super flyweight clash, Steven Navarro won his professional debut against Jose Lopez (4-3-2, 0 KOs) by technical knockout. A right hand stunned Lopez in round six, causing him to back away from his opponent. A barrage of punches from Navarro caused referee Robert Hoyle to stop proceedings at the 2:42 mark of the sixth.

Harley Mederos (6-0, 5 KOs) won via fourth-round technical knockout against Pedro Vicente (7-7-1, 2 KOs). The time of stoppage for this six-round lightweight bout was 0:40. Vicente went to the canvas in rounds one and two. A barrage of punches from Mederos in the fourth caused referee Allen Huggins to step in and end the fight.
