The in-ring return of light prospect Ryan Garcia will have to come a little later than anticipated.

Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs), was supposed to have his formal fight announcement this past Monday as multiple boxing sources ranging from SibbieBoxing to Steve Kim and Mike Coppinger last week as he was expected to take on Joseph JoJo” Diaz (32-1-1, 15 KOs) at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on November 27.

That announcement never came from Golden Boy and/or DAZN this week and now we know why.

Garcia sustained an injury to his right hand during a training session. The 23-year old Southern California native will undergo surgery on Monday, October 18, to repair his right wrist by the renowned orthopedic hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Surgery Center.

“I want to thank my fans for all the continued support,” said Ryan Garcia in the press release sent out by Golden Boy. “We are postponing my next fight for a couple of months as a result of a significant hand injury that requires immediate surgery. I will undergo surgery at Cedars-Sinai on Monday. I promise early 22 I will return better, faster, and stronger than ever. I love you guys!”

“Ryan is a very resilient young man,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman, and CEO of Golden Boy. “We hope he takes the necessary time to heal and recover. As a fighter, I understand the importance of taking hand injuries seriously, and I am glad Ryan is doing the right thing and addressing the injury quickly. We wish him a speedy recovery.”

As a result of the injury, Garcia will not move forward with a planned fight against Joseph Diaz in the coming months. Garcia was last in action at the beginning of the year, stopping Luke Campbell in seven rounds. Speedy recovery as this has been a whirlwind year outside of the ring for Garcia since that victory dealing with mental illness and now will have to wait just a little while longer before the eventual match with Diaz. Just don’t expect that get well card from him.
