Former WBO Featherweight Champion Robeisy Ramirez Reveals His Mission

On June 29, former WBO featherweight world champion Robeisy Ramirez (13-2, 8 KOs) returns to the ring against Brandon Leon Benitez (21-2, 9 KOs) in a 10-round bout, which will be the co-feature to Teofimo Lopez vs. Steve Claggett. The entire card will take place at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, FL. Viewers in the United States can catch the action live on ESPN, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes. Sky Sports will broadcast the event in the United Kingdom and Ireland, while those in Canada can do so on TSN. Ahead of his comeback fight, Ramirez has revealed his mission to fight Rafael Espinoza again.

Ramirez vs. Espinoza II

A victory for Ramirez will help propel him back towards a world title shot, to reclaim the belt he lost in his upset defeat against Rafael Espinoza in December. The defeat against Espinoza was as dramatic as it comes with the two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist being knocked down in round 12.

The immediate rematch did not happen as Espinoza wanted to make an interim defence, which he did in his destructive win over Sergio Chirino. A win for the Cuban fighter will seemingly confirm Top Rank’s plans for an Espinoza-Ramirez rematch before the end of the year. Steve Claggett will be aiming to scupper those plans, and is on a seven-fight winning streak, including his best career win, a split decision victory over former WBA “regular” featherweight titlist Xu Can in October 2022.

Ramirez Ready to Achieve His Mission

Speaking on his mission to regain his title, Ramirez said through an interpreter: “Getting my world title back is my mission right now.”

He continued: “Throughout my life and boxing career, I have always used setbacks as motivation. This time is no different.”

Speaking on his approach to this fight, the Cuban fighter said: “I have approached this training camp with a renewed sense of responsibility, seriousness, and great mental focus.”

He added: “I just want my loyal fans to know that this journey is far from over. I will be world champion before the end of the year, and this comeback will be legendary.”

His opponent is seemingly ready to cause the upset: “I’ve looked for a big fight like this for a while,” Benitez said. “Now that I have the opportunity, I am going to take advantage of it. So, I am here to win.”
