Oscar De La Hoya Shares Candid Thoughts on Potential Canelo vs. Bivol Rematch
On May 7, 2022, Canelo Alvarez stepped up in weight to face WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. Many doubted the Tokmak-born fighter if he could defeat the Mexican great at the T-Mobile Arena on Cinco de Mayo weekend. Bivol boxed brilliantly at times, using his slick footwork and brilliant combination punching to gain a unanimous decision victory. All three judges scored the fight 115-113. The Mexican fighter has spoken on occasions about his willingness to face Bivol once again, and Oscar De La Hoya has revealed his thoughts to Fight Hub TV about how he thinks that rematch would go.

De La Hoya Shares Candid Thoughts on Potential Alvarez vs Bivol 2
Since Alvarez left Golden Boy, there has been no love lost between him and De La Hoya. Their feud resurfaced before Canelo’s fight with Jaime Munguia, with heated words exchanged at a press conference. A reunion seems unlikely, and while speaking to Fight Hub TV, De La Hoya made it clear he doesn’t believe Canelo can beat Bivol: “There is no way he beats Bivol,” said De La Hoya.
“There is just no way. Styles make fights. As much as I would want to see a Mexican win inside that ring, there is no way he beats Bivol.”
Canelo Alvarez Next Steps
It was recently announced that Canelo had agreed on a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season and will face William Scull in May and fight Terence Crawford In September.
Following these two bouts, Canelo will fight twice more in 2026 to complete his agreement. A rematch against Bivol could happen next year despite Hamzah Sheeraz and Chris Eubank Jr. also being mentioned as potential options.
Whoever Canelo faces next, the eyes of the boxing world will be on each of these four fights, and maybe we could see Canelo-Bivol 2 in 2026.
