Report- Molina to headline May Mexico show without fans

A second noteworthy fight card since the COVID-19 pandemic is reportedly set to take place later in May in Mexico. And, it will involve a former World championship fighter, who is also co-promoting the event.

Boxing Insider Dan Rafael reported on social media Wednesday night the former IBF Junior Middleweight champion, Carlos Molina, will headline a fight card in Patzcuaro, Mexico on Saturday night May 23rd:

Molina (31 – 11- 2, 10 KOs), is slated to fight against fellow Mexican 154 pounder Michi Munoz (27 – 10 – 1) in the main event.

Molina captured the IBF Jr. Middleweight title with a split decision win in Las Vegas over Ishe Smith in September of 2013. He quickly lost the belt in his next fight in October of 2014 in Cancun, Mexico on a 12-round decision to Cornelius Brundage.

The veteran Molina has had an up-and-down career since late 2014, as he won six straight fight after the Brundage loss. But, then, he lost four fights in a row in 2017 – 18.

Molina also fought in Patzcuaro back in February against Nestor Fernando Garcia, whom he defeated by TKO stoppage.

Last Saturday night, the first live boxing event in the Western Hemisphere since the COVID-19 outbreak took place in Managua, Nicaragua. In a fight card with fans practicing social distancing and wearing protective PPE masks, the the main event saw fellow Nicaraguans, Robin Zamiro, win an eight round decision over Ramiro Blanco.

Rafael further reported that this fight card in Mexico will not have fans in attendance. And, Molina’s “King Carlos Promotions” is co-promoting the slate of fights along with multi division, Hall of Famer to be, Roy Jones Jr. and his promotion.

One of Jones’ fighters on the card is Eric Walker (20 – 2, 9 KOs) of Louisiana, who will be fighting the same Nestor Fernando Garcia whom Molina defeated in February, in an eight round Junior middleweight co-feature. This will obviously be the first time that an American fighter will be in action since the Coronavirus shut down fights worldwide in mid-March.
