Barry Hearn says we get Joshua-Fury in 2021
Barry Hearn, the founder of Matchroom Sport, feels very confident that a 2021 unification bout will take place between heavyweight champions Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.
Hearn speaking on Betfred’s “The Punter’s Guide Podcast” pretty much called it a lock that we see that contest in 2021.
“Tyson is not afraid of anyone, at the same time, and he knows if he beats Joshua, he will be an even bigger global figure. The good news about this pile-up of global sport events is that there will be competition for airtime when sport returns and people will not pay for tick-over contests. I think we have an excellent chance of seeing that fight. I would say 50-50 it is this year, and, if it is not this year, then it’s 95-5 for early 2021,” Hearn said on Betfred.

Of course, this mega-fight that boxing circles are clamoring for before the pandemic still faces the two most apparent brick walls still facing them before this can take place.
Tyson Fury is still facing an immediate rematch with Deontay Wilder has been pushed back to October of this year. Yet, that time table may be shifted as well due to the pandemic as well as the fact that the site location this was scheduled to take the place of Las Vegas, Nevada, still is under stay at home orders. That may be lifted sooner than later, as Las Vegas is reportedly talking about opening up casinos on May 15.
Joshua himself has a mandatory bout against IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev that has to be rescheduled as well. Originally was slated for June, that was scrapped due to the pandemic and the British Board of Control hasn’t opened up anything for live boxing in the United Kingdom as of this writing.
So until those two matches happen, this sounds like fantasy booking for an all British heavyweight title, which has to have a few events to happen before it can become a talked-about reality.
