Floyd Schofield with Oscar De La Hoya after Lucas Bahdi win

On October 10 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Floyd Schofield overcame a tough, determined Lucas Bahdi to become the new WBA lightweight world champion. The entire card was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in co-promotion with Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), live on DAZN. Following the main event, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya spoke to Fight Hub TV, where he teased some big fights for the new champion.

Floyd Schofield beats Lucas Bahdi to become new WBA champ

Through the first couple of rounds, Bahdi looked to fight on the back foot, while Schofield (20-0, 13 KOs) was the aggressor, using his jab to control the distance. Bahdi (20-1, 15 KOs) seemed focused on landing one big punch.

Schofield stayed on top, scoring a knockdown in the third, and regularly finding a home for his right hand. Bahdi then began to become the aggressor and continued to apply this approach, while “Kid Austin” looked to move and pick his shots.

Bahdi simply followed Schofield around the ring, looking to land that big shot. Schofield’s knee appeared to touch the canvas in round nine, but it was not ruled a knockdown by the referee. Schofield was ruled down in the eleventh after a right hook landed from Bahdi, but the replay showed his foot had been stepped on. The more consistent, cleaner work came from Schofield, and this was reflected on the scorecards, which read 119-108, 116-110, and 115-111, crowning “Kid Austin” the new WBA lightweight champion.

De La Hoya teases big fights for Floyd Schofield

When speaking to Fight Hub TV after Schofield’s hard-fought win over Lucas Bahdi, Oscar De La Hoya hinted at only big fights for the 24-year-old:

“I think him and Zepeda would be the big fight to do. Zepeda looked like a beast in his last fight. It’ll be interesting, because Zepeda doesn’t have the power like Lucas Bahdi, but he has the punch output, which can make it a great fight. We’ll see what happens.”

De La Hoya was then asked if Gervonta Davis were to return, would he want to make that fight for Schofield:

“Let’s go. This is boxing. The best have to fight the best. If Tank comes back, let’s make Tank Davis, why not? I was a fighter; let’s go. Let’s make the best fights happen,” added De La Hoya.

The Big Fight Weekend verdict

Floyd Schofield and his father, Sr., have often spoken about the difficulties in finding a fighter willing to face his son, because he has troubled them all in sparring.

However, now that he has a title, he will find fighters willing and having to face him in mandatories or money-spinning unification bouts. Team Schofield has made it abundantly clear they feel “Kid Austin” is the best lightweight in the world, and now he has the title to tempt these fighters into the ring, which is great news for them and for the boxing world. It means bigger fights involving the best fighters.
