‘Boots’ Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr: Terence Crawford breaks it down
On June 27, at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, Xander Zayas vs Jaron Ennis headlined a Matchroom Boxing card in association with Top Rank for Zayas’ WBO/WBA super welterweight title. The entire main card streamed live on DAZN PPV. It was a fight that provided plenty of fireworks, with Ennis winning by seventh-round stoppage. It remains to be seen what comes next for Ennis, but one fight that remains on the table is ‘Boots’ Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr. Terence Crawford, while on the Ariel Helwani Show, gave his view on that potential 154-pound clash.
Ennis defeats Zayas in Brooklyn
Ennis (36-0, 32 KOs) scored a knockdown in the first round with a well-timed left hand and was well on top when Zayas (23-1, 13 KOs) landed two big right hands. Ennis recovered well and appeared to have his legs back under him by the end of the round.
“Boots” showcased his power again in the fifth round, scoring another knockdown. The rest of the round saw Ennis deliver a beating on a brave Zayas, who did well to hear the bell.
The seventh round was all she wrote, with “Boots” scoring another knockdown, with the corner of Zayas withdrawing their man, crowning “Boots” Ennis the new unified WBO/WBA super welterweight champion.
Terence Crawford discusses Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr
Ariel Helwani asked Crawford about his views on ‘Boots’ Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr, and Crawford said:
“If Boots gets hurt like he did the last time, Ortiz is gonna finish him. He gotta tighten up his defence.
“I know [Boots] is faster than most. He’s more explosive than most, but at the same time, he’s shown in the past that he can get careless and that he’s going out there just to fight.
“When you get higher and higher, that’s not going to be enough.”
The super welterweight division has plenty of mouth-watering potential matchups, with Sebastian Fundora set to defend his WBC title against Ermal Hadribeaj, and Josh Kelly, the IBF champion, set to face Caoimhin Agyarko. The biggest fight out there feels like Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr. Robert Garcia, the trainer of Vergil Ortiz Jr recently spoke to BoxingScene, and said “I already talked to the team. I talked to Vergil Sr. I talked to Vergil himself. We’ll go straight into the fight.“
