Katie Taylor: Fight record, career, boxing legacy ahead of farewell fight
Katie Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs) is without doubt one of, if not the greatest, female boxer of all time. Her stellar amateur career preceded an astonishing pro career, where the Irish legend has faced many of the best fighters. It is expected that on Friday, it will be announced that the WBO, IBF and WBA super lightweight champion Taylor will finally get her wish to fight for one last time, with the opponent expected to be Flora Pili, with the vacant WBC title also on the line at Croke Park on September 5.
Katie Taylor: Before Amanda Serrano 1
Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano 1 at Madison Square Garden in 2022 is considered by many to be the greatest female fight of all time. Taylor started fast, showing her exceptional hand speed and slick footwork, before Serrano fought her way back into the fight. Taylor ended the fight on top, winning by split decision, with scorecards of 96-94 to Serrano, while the other two favoured the work of the Irish fighter 96-93 and 97-93.
Before this legendary fight, Taylor had largely been untroubled, with only Natasha Jonas and Delfine Persoon pushing the Irish fighter. Early standout career wins came against Jessica McCaskill and Nina Meinke.
Standout wins and final fight rumours
After Serrano 1, Katie Taylor fought the Puerto Rican two more times, winning by majority decision twice. She also suffered her only professional defeat against Chantelle Cameron, before avenging that loss six months later.
BoxingScene and others are now reporting that Taylor will get her wish and fight at Croke Park in Dublin on September 5. Eddie Hearn has posted on social media that there will be a press conference on June 5 to formally announce her last fight against Flora Pili (12-0, 2 KOs). The WBC super lightweight title will be on the line, due to Sandy Ryan taking a break from boxing to have a child, after she won the vacant title against Karla Ramos Zamora.
To have her final fight at Croke Park, the 82,000-seater national stadium of Ireland, is a dream come true for Taylor. Her legacy is secure, with countless amateur gold medals and professional world titles, and her only defeat already avenged.
Katie Taylor is the GWOAT, and should the announcement on Friday be what we are expecting, Taylor will have the opportunity to become the undisputed champion for the third time, and the boxing world will be ready to watch the Irish pugilist go to battle one last time.
