‘He did it all wrong’: Peter Fury identifies Tyson Fury’s mistakes
Heavyweight boxing appears to be in a good place, with Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury likely to happen later this year, should both come through their respective “warm-up” fights. Rico Verhoeven pushed Oleksandr Usyk all the way on May 23 in Giza, and his trainer, Peter Fury, spoke on talkSPORT about the mistakes made by Tyson Fury in his two fights against Usyk.

These two have been rumoured to be fighting each other for the best part of 10 years. Defeats, injuries, and, more recently, the terrible car crash AJ was in have continued to delay this potential huge fight.
Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) will face Kristian Prenga (20-1, 20 KOs) on July 25, while Fury (35-2-1, 24 KOs) is expected to have a warm-up fight on August 1. AJ hasn’t fought since facing Jake Paul, who he knocked out in the sixth round. Fury had a valuable 12-round fight earlier this year, comfortably outpointing Arslanbek Makhmudov.
Peter Fury talks Tyson Fury mistakes
Having guided Verhoeven to a highly-lauded showing against Usyk, Peter Fury knows the Ukrainian’s style well, which gives his assessment of Tyson’s approach added weight.
Peter also trained Tyson for his memorable win against Wladimir Klitschko to become the unified heavyweight champion in 2015. The tactics were spot on that night, and when speaking to talkSPORT, Peter spoke about Tyson’s tactics in both fights vs Oleksandr Usyk:
“So, as soon as the opening bell, I’ve seen the way he’s performing, I’ve thought he’s doing it wrong. You’re a bigger man, coming in at 20 stone and done all the wrong things.
“Instead of going forward, stand back. Look, he’s got his team there, and I’m not criticising anybody, but both of his tactics were not good in both of those fights. He was going about it wrong, because if you look at the structure of Usyk and what he does, to stand off and try and box an elite boxer who’s lighter than you, who’s giving pounds away, he’s gonna ping you all over the shop.”
