On May 2, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV, David Benavidez defeated Gilberto Ramirez in the headline fight of a PBC Pay-Per-View event available on Prime Video and DAZN. The event was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Sampson Boxing in association with TGB Promotions.
After this highly impressive win, Benavidez spoke to Ariel Helwani and named his top three pound-for-pound fighters.
David Benavidez dominates and stops Gilberto Ramirez
Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) settled quickly to life at cruiserweight, showcasing blistering hand speed, which stopped Ramirez (48-2, 30 KOs) from settling. Benavidez was prepared to take a punch to let off a five- or six-punch combination, which made life so hard for Zurdo. A series of heavy hooks in round four saw Ramirez take a knee.
That domination continued, with the speed and power of El Monstruo ensuring he stayed in control of the fight. In round six, Benavidez landed another hurtful combination, forcing Ramirez to take another knee. Zurdo was unable to continue, crowning Benavidez the new unified WBO/WBA cruiserweight champion, while still holding the WBC light heavyweight title.
David Benavidez names his P4P top three
With Naoya Inoue and David Benavidez winning on May 2, it has many boxing fans discussing their pound-for-pound rankings, and when talking to Ariel Helwani, Benavidez named his top three.
When asked to name his top three pound-for-pound fighters, Benavidez said:
“Definitely (Oleksandr) Usyk, (Naoya) Inoue, and then me. I’ve seen that they just put me at number three, and I agree with that. I think the runs I’ve been having these past couple of years with beating David Morrell, beating (Oleksandr) Gvozdyk, beating Anthony Yarde, coming up 25 pounds in my first fight, and fighting for two titles at cruiserweight and capturing them in the fashion I did.
“Honestly, it’s perfect the way they had it at number three. And the only reason I’m giving myself number three is because I have so much respect for Inoue, because that man has done so much for the sport of boxing. He’s a great champion. That’s the only reason I’m not putting myself at number two.”
