Gilberto Ramírez vs. David Benavidez fight recap

David Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) became the first person to knock out Gilberto Ramírez (48-2, 30 KOs), doing so in six rounds.

The official time of stoppage was 2:59. Benavidez is now the WBA and WBO cruiserweight world champion with the victory. He is also the reigning WBC light heavyweight world champion.

Benavidez established early on that he had the quicker hands. Both men were sitting down on their shots, something that was evident in round three. Benavidez was landing more than his opponent and was also more accurate.

Ramírez was rocked by hooks to the head in the fourth. A barrage of punches that culminated in a right uppercut eventually knocked him down. Although Ramírez got up, his nose was bloodied and there was swelling around his eyes.

Benavidez continued to use his fast hands to throw and land far more punches than his opponent. The swelling around Ramírez’s right eye was particularly bad, clearly causing him discomfort. He got hit with a barrage of hooks towards the end of round six, causing him to take a knee. He did not beat referee Thomas Taylor’s count, putting an end to proceedings and allowing Benavidez to become the new unified cruiserweight world champion.

Armando Reséndiz vs. Jaime Munguía fight recap

Jaime Munguía (46-2, 35 KOs) is once again a world champion thanks to a unanimous decision win against Armando Reséndiz (16-3, 11 KOs).

Scores were 120-108, 119-109, and 117-111. Munguía is now the WBA super middleweight world champion with the victory. He previously held a world title at super welterweight, making five defences of the WBO belt before vacating.

In the opening round both fighters attempted to figure out each other. The second saw Munguía open up with his swinging hooks. Reséndiz attempted to return fire but was careful not to engage too much on the inside.

Both men picked up the tempo in round four. Munguía threw and landed more punches than his opponent. Reséndiz struggled to close the distance between the two and was unable to match the challenger’s output. Munguía would move back from time to time and stay along the ropes, but the reigning champion was unable to take any advantage of this.

Reséndiz continued to get outworked as the fight entered the championship rounds. He pursued Munguía around the ring, but could not land anything that would bother the challenger. Reséndiz got rocked by a left look upstairs in round 12. He was able to remain on his feet till the end of the fight in spite of the barrage of punches that ensued. Reséndiz let his hands go towards the end of the twelfth, but it was too late for him as Munguía proceeded to win via unanimous decision.
