Garcia- Golden Boy Promotions make up with extension

A bizarre weekend that saw lightweight contender Ryan Garcia’s Saturday night fight cancelled and Golden Boy Promotions embarrassed publicly, again, including by their own fighter, has ended with all sides smiling.

This after Garcia and Golden Boy jointly announced on Wednesday evening that the fighter has agreed to a multi- fight five year extension that includes more money from Golden Boy and Oscar De La Hoya to continue to promote the unbeaten Californian:

As we have written repeatedly about coming out of the weekend, Garcia was slated to fight fellow Philadelphia lightweight contender, Avery Sparrow in the co-main event on DAZN streaming service from Carson, CA. That is, until Sparrow was taken into custody Friday morning by U.S. Marshals on an outstanding felony warrant back in Pennsylvania.

This left Garcia without an opponent, and when Golden Boy tried to have him fight another veteran lightweight contender, Romero Duno, who was already on Saturday night’s card, Garcia and his camp balked.

Then, De La Hoya gave an extensive interview to the L.A. Times published Monday, where he tried to do damage control about Garcia’s unhappiness. And, that’s when Garcia took to Twitter to blast De La Hoya publicly for not communicating with him privately but through the media.

In the end, especially in a sport like boxing, money talks.

And over the course lengthy meetings both Tuesday and Wednesday, the extension was agreed to by both.

And, Garcia has gotten apparently significantly more money guaranteed his way by GBP and De La Hoya, while they have him locked up if he wins titles, etc.. It’s also expected that Garcia will go ahead and fight Duno coming up on the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez – Sergey Kovalev World Light Heavyweight championship fight in Las Vegas on November 2nd.

Golden Boy and those fighters made the joint announcement of their fight on Wednesday afternoon to officially kick off the promotional tour.

As for Garcia, he hopes at some point to get on the radar for Unified Lightweight Title holder, Vasiliy Lomachenko. Lomachenko now holds the WBO, WBA and WBC belts at 135 lbs. However, he apparently is waiting for the winner of the Richard Commey-Teofimo Lopez fight for the IBF Title in December.
