Report- Gervonta Davis has lightweight opponent for early December?

It appears that Gervonta Davis is, in fact, set on moving up to Lightweight this winter, but a report Tuesday night has an interesting twist on who the former World Champ’s opponent will possibly be?

Boxingscene at senior writer, Keith Idec, reported that the WBA Junior Lightweight (130 lbs.) champion will be relinquishing his belt to fight at 135 lbs. or heavier from here on out. And, he’s learned that Davis’ opponent will likely be a guy that fought on the undercard of Davis’s last title defense in July:

As Idec reported, apparently Mayweather Promotions and Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) who handle Davis, have a plan in mind to put Davis in against Yuriorkis Gamboa. That’s because the 37 year old veteran Gamboa, a former three division World Champion has credibility after his second-round destruction of Roman Martinez on the undercard of Davis’s win in July in Baltimore against Ricardo Nunez.

We wrote on Sunday about Davis and his desire to move up to lightweight and that he potentially would be setting his sights on unified Champion Vasiliy Lomachenko. Lomachenko just added the WBC 135 lbs. title to his resume’ with a 12 round unanimous decision win over England’s Luke Campbell on Saturday night in London.

Davis, who will be giving up his WBA belt,  has already been named the number one ranked Contender by the WBA as a Lightweight. And, a fight with Gamboa, who is currently now ranked second in those ratings, will put the winner in line to be a mandatory challenger for Lomachenko.

Obviously, there is the complication that Lomachenko is promoted by rival Bob Arum and Top Rank Boxing. And, there would have to be a mutual agreement similar to what PBC is doing in the early part of 2020 with a Deontay Wilder – Tyson Fury rematch that would be promoted by both and potentially televised on Showtime PPV and ESPN Plus.

The belief is that Mayweather Promotions and PBC want Davis to headline a Pay-per-View in the near future for Showtime and it could be this fight with Gamboa.

Although some will scoff that that’s not a big enough matchup to entice the buying public on PPV. Obviously the fight could also be held on Showtime premium cable, where Davis has fought exclusively over the last couple of years.
