Boxing at the Olympics: Day 15 Results

Lin Yu-ting Outboxes Julia Szeremeta to Claim Gold

Lin Yu-ting (Chinese Taipei) claimed a win on points against Julia Szeremeta (Poland).

Yu-ting’s reach allowed her to land punches from range. On the other hand, Szeremeta struggled to get close and land. This allowed the Taiwanese fighter to claim the first two rounds. While Szeremeta had better success closing the distance in the third, Yu-ting was still able to outbox her off of the backfoot. As a result, she won on all five scorecards.

Nesthy Petecio (The Philippines) and Esra Yıldız Kahraman (Türkiye), who lost to Szeremeta and Yu-ting in the semifinals respectively won bronze in the women’s 57kg tournament.

Abdumalik Khalokov Makes it Four Golds for Uzbekistan

Abdumalik Khalokov (Uzbekistan) won on points against Munarbek Seiitbek Uulu (Kyrgyzstan).

While one judge had Khalokov winning 29-28, the other four saw it 30-27. With the victory, he wins the men’s 57kg competition at the Olympics. It was also Uzbekistan’s fourth boxing gold medal in Paris.

Khalokov was constantly moving around the ring, making him difficult to hit. While Uulu pursued his opponent, he would get hit whenever he got too close to the Uzbek. Rounds two and three saw a lot of holding whenever the fighter from Kyrgyzstan got close, but Khalokov was still doing the better work that helped him seal the rounds on the scorecards.

Charlie Senior (Australia) and Javier Ibáñez Diaz (Bulgaria), who lost to Khalokov and Uulu in the semifinals respectively won bronze in the men’s 57kg tournament.

Li Qian Finally Becomes an Olympic Gold Medalist

Li Qian (China) finally became a gold medalist with a win on points against Atheyna Bylon (Panama).

While one judge had Bylon winning 29-28, the other four saw it 29-28 for Qian. As a result, the Chinese fighter wins the women’s 75kg competition at the Olympics. This was China’s third boxing gold medal in Paris. Previously, Qian had won bronze at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and silver at the Tokyo games.

The bout itself saw a fair amount of holding between the two. During the moments, where punches were landed, Qian was landing cleaner. While Bylon had a more successful third round, it was not enough to overcome the deficit, leading Qian to win the contest.

Caitlin Parker (Australia) and Cindy Ngamba (Refugee Olympic Team), who lost to Qian and Bylon in the semifinals respectively, won bronze in the women’s 75kg tournament.

Bakhodir Jalolov Wins Second Olympic Gold Medal

Bakhodir Jalolov (Uzbekistan) won on points against Ayoub Ghadfa (Spain) to win his second-ever Olympic gold medal.

One judge saw the fight 30-26 for Jalolov. Another had it 29-28 for “The Big Uzbek.” The remaining three judges saw the bout 30-27. Jalolov had previously won gold at the Tokyo Olympics. With this result, Uzbekistan have won five boxing gold medals in Paris alone.

Within the first round, Jalolov established himself as the stronger fighter. A straight left hand caused the referee to issue a standing eight count against Ghadfa. Right when the bell rang to mark the end of the round, another straight left resulted in the referee issuing another standing eight count against the Spaniard. As the shorter fighter, Ghadfa resorted to lunging to get his power shots in. However, Jalolov’s defence allowed him to avoid many of them. Jalolov was able to box to victory.

Nelvie Tiafack (Germany) and Djamili-Dini Aboudou Moindze (France), who lost to Jalolov and Ghadfa in the semifinals respectively won bronze in the men’s +92kg tournament.
