Memorable Fights: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford
On July 29, we finally got the fight many wanted – as Terence Crawford faced off against Errol Spence Jr. Crawford pummelled his opponent, stopping him in round nine to become the undisputed welterweight king.
Memorable Fights: Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia
Ryan Garcia vs. Gervonta Davis was a fight that had no titles on the line. This did not stop the fight from becoming a PPV smash hit. “Tank” bossed the bout, dropping his opponent in round two and ending the fight in round seven with a beautifully timed body shot. The contest was a great commercial success, with 1.2 million pay-per-view buys in the United States alone.
Memorable Fights: Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis
On December 9, Devin Haney put on a boxing clinic against Regis Prograis, winning by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout 120-107. Haney controlled the tempo and hit Prograis almost at will, who was bamboozled by the speed and accuracy of “The Dream.”
Katie Taylor vs. Chantelle Cameron II
Katie Taylor tasted defeat for the first time in her career against Chantelle Cameron but decided to take the option of a rematch. Taylor got her revenge in the rematch, where she started well, boxing great inside and on the back foot. She showed superb bravery in the championship rounds as Cameron came on well. “KT” won by majority decision with the judges scorecards reading 95-95, 98-92 and 96-94.
Anthony Joshua vs. Otto Wallin
The build-up to “Day of Reckoning” was memorable, and fight night lived up to expectations. Anthony Joshua vs. Otto Wallin was the co-main event – and under the tutelage of Ben Davison – we saw a rejuvenated AJ, who landed almost at will, whether it be to the head or the body, before Wallin’s corner waved the fight off, awarding Joshua victory before round six began.
Jaime Munguía vs. Sergey Derevyanchenko
Jaime Munguía vs. Sergiy Derevyanchenko provided fireworks from the first bell as both fighters traded heavy shots. This all-action beginning did not slow down throughout. Munguía finished the stronger as he dug deep in the final two rounds – dropping Derevyanchenko in the final round to win a close unanimous decision.
Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov vs. Joe Cordina
Joe Cordina went to war against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov at the Cardiff International Arena in Wales. It was an exhilarating fight that saw both bring their a-game. Cordina dropped his opponent in the second round and won by split decision, winning the IBF strap he was previously stripped of.
David Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade
The big punching David Benavidez went up against Demetrius Andrade on November 25. Andrade picked his shots well and fought smartly, but the pressure tactics, accuracy and power of Benavidez, wore Andrade down to the point “El Monstruo” forced the stoppage, as “Boo Boo” failed to appear for round seven.
Rafael Espinoza vs. Robeisy Ramirez
Rafael Espinoza vs. Robeisy Ramírez is undoubtedly a fight-of-the-year candidate. Ramirez went into the contest as a big favourite – but Espinoza’s work in the first half of the fight and the knockdown in round twelve was enough for him to claim a big upset, with one judge scoring it 113-113, and the other two judges scoring the bout 115-111 and 114-112 for the Mexican fighter.
Jesse Rodriguez vs. Sunny Edwards
Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez and Sunny Edwards clashed in a highly anticipated flyweight world title fight in Glendale, Arizona. Edwards showed his bravery throughout the contest, but the speed, accuracy and power of “Bam” proved too much as the corner of the British fighter decided to withdraw their man before the beginning of round ten.
