“It’s super special, super exciting. I’m the talk of the town,” said Anderson about the opportunity to headline in his hometown of Toledo. “It’s a new feeling. Happy to be here, happy to embrace it. I’m happy to be an inspiration to the kids.”

“I come prepared for anything and everything. Luckily, he’s [Martin] still a southpaw. I think that was the biggest reason we chose him as the secondary opponent. He’s also a bigger name, was a former world champion. He fought a few world title holders. I’m prepared for everything. It [the late opponent switch] didn’t throw a monkey wrench in the plan but it made us go back to the drawing board and look at the tapes and come back with a plan.”

“It was huge,” replied Anderson when asked about the time he spent with Roy Jones Jr. in Houston. “I was super excited, I was stoked. I was soaking up all the information in the game. The conversation, I guess stuff just boiled over. It was a lifetime of pressure. Since I was a kid, I’ve always been one of the kids with the most problems. For me to be on this stage, representing my city, everybody coming out to see me, it’s a lot. I’m just overwhelmed with it.

“I was just happy,” said Martin about receiving the call to face Anderson on short notice. “I’ve been putting in a lot of work so I’m just happy that the hard work finally paid off.”

“Surprisingly, I won my national championship here in Toledo, Ohio before I turned professional. I’m just coming back and reliving the experience that I had when I was here. I’m up for the challenge. He’s [Anderson] is a big, strong, young lion. I know he’s dealing with the pressures of fighting in his hometown, people bombarding you, that’s a lot of work. It can be exhausting.”

“I got to thank God for being able to still be here and be relevant. This is a hard sport, an unforgiving sport. I’m just very thankful at the end of the day to still be able to hit a big stage and support my family.”

Fight details

Anderson vs. Martin will take place at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio on July 1. The fight, including another heavyweight clash between Arslanbek Makhmudov (16-0, 15 KOs) and Raphael Akpejiori (15-0, 14 KOs) will be broadcast live on ESPN beginning at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday. Time permitting, a lightweight clash between Alex de Oliveira (20-4, 14 KOs) and Abdullah Mason (8-0, 7 KOs) is also scheduled to take place during the ESPN broadcast. Undercard bouts begin at 6:15 p.m. ET and can be viewed on ESPN+. All timings are subject to change due to the length of undercard fights.
